C 中动名词应当是定语从句吧，从句意可以看出不是修饰个geologists, 只能修饰seismic waves。另外呢，看到了more slowly我就明白了most应当是修饰rapidly，因为快慢是矛盾的，只有在不同情况下才能有两种动作。

geologists use xx to char waves （that xxxxxxx）,traveling.....不就一个主句加一个限定性定语从句吗....？traveling不是伴随状语，逻辑主语是geologists？这么久了不知道还有没有人能回答.....

其实C和E的区别还在于后面的slow啊，slow的比较级修饰动词，肯定要用more slowly而不能用slower，因此就可以排除E

首先，看到了and，明显考平行结构，most rapidly through......and more slowly through.....平行。从句子意思可以看出，travel应该修饰waves，which指代不明有可能指代interior。所以，答案选C

travel是不修饰waves的，doing 表结果解释主语，表伴随修饰动词。这里的“traveling”是表示伴随的意思。
OG给出的解释是“the action, ricochet, is further described in a participial phrase in which traveling...is then further described in comparison of travel speeds in cold and hot regions of Earth's crust”
可见traveling修饰的时动词，ricochet本生。

另外我倒是觉得这个E waves that, and that相当给力。。不像OG说的那么惨啊。只不过毁在了slower上。。

个人浅见~
我倒认为这是一个可以作为排除的split（parallelism）
E选项的结构是waves that originate… and ricochet rapidly...and that travel。简单来说就是，X that... and that...的结构，这种表达会造成歧义，好像是在说，这分别是X that orginated...and riochet... 和X that travel...
这里要考察的是parallel noun modifier, 修饰的是同一个noun。而重复that是gramatically correct but logically nonsensical

类似的错误选项在OG17/721也有。是讲combination of a reliable supply of water and good growing conditions。
错误选项B里有combination of a reliable supply of water and of good growing conditions。OG是这样点评的：the repetition of the preposition of before good growing conditions makes no sense. It seems to indicate that there is both a combination of a reliable supply of water and a combination of good growing conditions

体会一下~不过这不是e的main deciding point. slower的出现太刺眼~

哈哈，谢谢回复两年前的帖子，答主已经毕业工作，题主状态应该也类似。
首先ricochet和travel意思重叠，不能并列，只能后者修饰前者。不过ricochet这词我到现在也不认识，现查字典知道的。。
退一步讲，即使能够并列，S that V1 and V2 and that V3句型非常别扭，不如说S that V1, V2, and V3。
做题步骤应该是slower秒杀三个，which远距离修饰秒一个。
