求问OG16-sc-Q2 新增的一道问题

请问GMAC在最优选项里再次容忍that这类词充当代词吗？我记得these出现过一次。求nn们解答一下。多谢！我当时以为这是个绝对性错误。

这道题代表的是OG16的新趋势，that/these/those/this这类词在此前的Manhattan或者官方题目中从未直接作为单独的代词出现过。

其中Manhattan中提到的例外that可以作为New Copy出现，并不属于此题的情况。New Copy的例子：
Higher Education in the western countries has been for a long period of time way better in both quality and quantity than that in Asian and African countries, according to historical issues.
- that refers to Higher Education (not exactly in western countries), but is a new copy in Asian and African countries.

OG16 Q2的句子：At first, hurricanes travel from east to west, because that is the direction of the prevailing winds in the tropics, but they ......
- that作为一个完全独立的代词指代了前面的 from east to west, 是和此前的”规则“完全冲突的。


这个现象并不是说从前的总结，甚至Manhattan的总结是错的。以前也发生GMAC的部分规则发生转变的现象。其实本来that/this/those/these这类代词指代在formal english中就存在争议。OG的这一改变只能说明一点：


相对于Strict Rules (in most cases, they will not be the main reason to solve an SC question)，GMAT越来越侧重于“考核语义”去解题了。

我能肯定就是because肯定是引导的状语从句， 如果是状语从句的话， 那么修饰的要么是前一个句子中的动词，要么是整个句子。 from east to west只是一个状语，不能算是一个动作，如果是动作的应该是travel， 所以我觉得that应该是可以指代这个词组的， 因为that甚至可以指代整个从句，或者是句子。
语法书上的例句有 （《大学英语语法讲座与测试》这本书之前有大牛推荐过，很好用） P92页
Will your father lend her the car? That he won't
He is my friend, that he is .
A选线一个是重复，还有一个问题是就是begin 后面是动名词还是动词不定式的问题。
有意识的开始或者停止做某事 --》 动名词， 不定式则表示情况发生变化 P643
I began writing the book in 1990
It began to rain as soon as we got home
天气是无法有自我意识的，所以这也算一个错误点吧

我主要想解释的是that的存在。。。不好意思用平行误导了。。。但是如果错了还请一定指出！！

我觉得这题考的不是平行，是begin和at first重复，然后平行的话A是说得通的，曼哈顿里说了，平行优先采用，but +subject+v+o句型，只要Ahurricane不是加了逗号就行优先用a的句型，问题只是begin和 at first，我在想这里的that到底是指代from to还是单只west  prevailing west盛行西风我可以认为west可以单只风的方向，如果是整个动作那肯定不会是that或者it指代，OG明确说会用 do so或者such来指代，所以我觉得这里可能用的是 subject be object里面的一个小平行，that direction 因为direction和that be后面加的是同一个东西，所以拆开了变成that is direction，不知道这样对不对

because这里引导的是一个原因状语从句， because后面如果没有that整个句子都不是一个完整的句子。而且that在这里指代的前面提到过的事情（单词， 名词短语，从句， 句子），所以这里指代的是from east to west， 如果用it的话，可能就会给人一种指代不清的感觉， 不知道是说east还是说west。
所以说becuase后面句子完整--》必须有主语--》it不行，只能用that了。
如果不对了请一定指出来。
虽然看到平行就可以很快做出来了

我的意思也不是from east to west 是动作，我的意思是说gmat里面that和it那样只能只待有明确先行词的名次，大学语法里面的that指代是正常口语中用的，就像like不能在gmat里面举例一样，如果是指代from east to west 我觉得g里面只能用同位语或者so，such指代（我没说清，但这不是动作），我只是疑惑这里that究竟是指代整个状语还是单只west（只看就近，不看可能与east歧义），反正我是不能理解that在这里用法，希望大牛们给出答案

曼哈顿是允许that指代前述名词的，条件是that或those表示a new copy 或new copies, 并且要被修饰。
these和this是不能单独指代名词的，他们只能用于形容词，例如these people/this finding。
A项比较严重的就是at first和begin的重复问题，还有B选项相比A表达更加effective和concise，B更好一点。
记得Ron说过，pronoun的指代在SC里面不需优先考虑，如果没有明显的单复数指代错误，可以先用agreement和parallism等知识排除选项。
