10. The following appeared in the editorial section of a local newspaper.
“This past winter, 200 students from laceName w:st="on">WaymarshlaceName> laceType w:st="on">StatelaceType> College traveled to the state capitol building to protest against proposed cuts in funding for various state college programs. The other 12,000 Waymarsh students evidently weren’t so concerned about their education: they either stayed on campus or left for winter break. Since the group who did not protest is far more numerous, it is more representative of the state’s college students than are the protesters. Therefore the state legislature need not heed the appeals of the protesting students.”
GRATUITOUS ASSUMPTION that the students did not present because they did not care. The absence in pretest against proposed cut, however, doesn’t necessarily mean that these students are not concerned about the issue. They may have good reasons not to participate, and they may have various ways to demonstrate their objection to the funding cut. For instance, perhaps most students chose to write letters to opposite the plan, or perhaps they were actually planning an even greater protest immediately after the winter break.
UNFAIR ASSUMPTION that the 200 students are not representative of all W students. No evidence however, is provided to support the assertion. If these 200 students were selected carefully across the spectrum of W college students, they would be highly representative. Or if the 200 students account for large proportion of those who will be affected by the funding cut, the legislature would have to carefully consider the students’ attitude.
INSSUFICIENT SAMPLE: the statistic of W college students is quoted to support the conclusion that the students in the state as a whole do not care about the funding cut. But the information is vague because the sample is too small to represent all students in the state. Only one sample was investigated, thus making the hasty generalization unreliable. Unless more evidence can be provided to demonstrate that the W students represent all students as a whole, or unless the author presents more data about students’ activism in other college, the results of the survey is worthless to support the author’s conclusion.
还有就是请教一下,是说the author fails to do 还是failed to do??
