The issue of whether a business should adapt a clearly hierarchical structure with clearly defined roles for all levels of employee is a complex one. To some extent, I agree that a clearly hierarchical structure benefits a business in the way it can improve productivity through division of labor. On the other hand, the determining factors contributing to a business’s success are far more than just a structure. In the final analysis, I think what structure a business should adapt depends on the nature of business.
To begin with, it is sagacious to admit in some circumstances a hierarchical structure enhances productivity. With clearly defined roles for all level of employee, everyone in the organization knows his or her responsibility and will be trained specialized in the area over time. This division of labor leads to the improvement of productivity. For instance, in the 19th century, division of labor was one of the most important factors contributing to the leaps and bounds of the profit increase during industry revolution. Moreover, it consequently makes an management job easier because of the clear and narrow ranged job description for employees and the clear reporting mechanism.
However, society has changed tremendously in the 21st century, many practices that were applicable to the “good old times” are not practical for many new businesses any more. In addition, success of a business is now more determined by excellent work force, innovation and fine management team. To cope with questions raised by the new era, such as volatile market demand, requirement of high skill workers, businesses have to acquire employees with a broader base knowledge. Take Japanese car manufacture in the United States for example, its resources and technology are no better than American’s, however, because it trains its employees in different areas of jobs and even the machine it uses can manufacture different parts of a car, to improve flexibility. Japanese car manufacture is considered more superior than American’s. Admittedly, some businesses are still blessed by division of labor, such as socks manufacture in china, every employee has specified roles in a product line.
In conclusion, the issue of adopting hierarchical structure or not should really depends on the nature of business and where the business stands in the level of its development. Even though hierarchical structure might prove to be efficient in some contexts, it is by no means universally applicable to every single situation, even less its drawbacks such as lack of promotion opportunity, decreased creativity level and the losing sight of whole picture. |
