我也想借这个帖子问一下:

My choice is between Michigan & NYU. Currently NYU seems to have no scholarship while Michigan has a few. I am not a finance person but more marketing & strategic related. How do you guys think about that?

hi delphine18-

NYU & Michigan clearly have different strengths & I'm sure you're aware of it. If you go by the lastest US News ranking, Michigan ranks 3 in marketing (just after Kellogg and Wharton), whereas NYU is not top 10 in this category. (NYU is #3 in finance). If you're very sure that you'll stay in marketing/strategy, then perhaps Michigan is a better choice?

I won't go to a school just because of ranking, and this is not to say NYU doesn't offer great opportunities in marketing. Ultimately it's about where you fit in. If possible, talk to as many alumni from both schools as you can.

If you are not fascinated with the metropolitan setting of NYC and not a financial or consulting career seeker. NYU is not necessarily preferable to Michigan.

delphine, Except you will pursue a career in Finance, otherwise Michigan is a much better choice, no matter it is about general management, marketing or consulting

Thank you so much, guys, I really become clearer now. Still one more question, for a strategic consulting job, which school could have more advantages?

delphine18-

for job placement information, I'd suggest that you check out the most recent stat posted on their websites. I think you'll want to check which firms specifically recruit there & what % of class get recruited (both intern & full-time). Also check out their consulting club's websites.

One word of caution, though. Consulting has been hit pretty hard in the past few days during the economic downturn. So the hiring was low almost across the board until last year. So take the numbers you see as a ballpark comparison, rather than as absolute numbers. (Glad to report that consulting is on a rebound now! Let's see how long it stays that way).

Good luck!

Thank you Jane, I have looked at Michigan's career report and the No. of graduates hired by consulting firms seems good. However, I don't know whether these guys are strategic or general management or IT focused. According to common sense, Michigan is strong in operation management and technical things but not in strategic. That's my major concern.

NYU hasn't provided the job report yet. But according to the brochure & some alumni, there are quite a few students who concentrated on strategic and joined consulting firms later
