The following is a recommendation from the Board of Directors of Monarch Books.
"We recommend that Monarch Books open a café in its store. Monarch, having been in business at the same location for more than twenty years, has a large customer base because it is known for its wide selection of books on all subjects. Clearly, opening the café would attract more customers. Space could be made for the café by discontinuing the children's book section, which will probably become less popular given that the most recent national census indicated a significant decline in the percentage of the population under age ten. Opening a café will allow Monarch to attract more customers and better compete with Regal Books, which recently opened its own café."
Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.

In this argument, the author recommend that Monarch Books should open a cafe in the store to attract more customers and compete with Regal Books. To to supported his idea, the author presented some evidences and assumptions. Although this argument seems reasonable at first glance, but a close scrutiny will reveal that several additional questions should be answered explicitly for a objective evaluation for this argument.

At the first place, the author predicted that children’s books section could be used for cafe as a survey indicates that  the decline in the percentage of population under age ten. However, does the total of children under age ten really decline? Although the percentage of children under age ten is declining, the total of children under age ten will increase if the amount of population raise rapidly. Also, maybe the situation in the city which Monarch Books located is different with nationwide, the percentage of children under age ten maybe raise. So a further survey is desirable  to better evaluate this argument. If the survey indicates that the customers under age ten will really decline, then it will justifiable for further discussion for this recommend.On the contrary, the premise that children’s books section could be used for cafe will be strongly weakened.

Continue with question above, even if the customers under age ten will decline, will the behavior that discontinuing children’s books section impact visits of Monarch Books? The argument mentioned that Monarch Books is known as its wide selection of books on all subjects. Obviously, discontinuing the children’s books section will disable this advantage of Monarch Books. So for better evaluate this argument, it’s necessary to know whether this action will decline the visits of Monarch Books. If discontinue children’s books section will not impact the visits of Monarch Books, the recommend of open cafe could be considered. However, open cafe may be counterproductive if some customers will never visits Monarch Books as they think Monarch Books does not provide wide selection of books.

Finally, granted it’s safe to use children’s books section for the cafe. The author assumed  that Regal Books attracted more customers as they just open a cafe in  store. Does that assumption corresponded to the fact? This question is desirable to answer to better evaluate this argument. If Regal Books did not attract more customers after open the cafe, imitate Regal Books will not help attract more customers to and this recommend will be unreasonable. On the other hand, it will strongly strengthen this argument if Regal Book’s cafe could help attract more customers.

To summarize, open cafe in Monarch Books seems constructive advice for attract more customers. However, questions above should be answered to better evaluate this argument as the author fails to provide enough persuasive information to evaluate whether Monarch Books should open a cafe.
