2.13 独立 It’s widely acknowledged that the performances of teachers are evaluated by various standards, such as their theoretic contributions and their academic innovations, which are all assessed by experts in education. However, this evaluation mechanism is now being questioned by more and more experts. For my part, I am in favor of the viewpoint that students’ feedbacks are more essential than peers’ assessment in the evaluations of the teacher’s performance.
To begin, there is no doubt that the calling of teachers is to impart knowledge to their student, so the most fundamental criterion for their performance is student’s grasp of what has taught, which can’t not be well-acquainted by other teachers. When I was a primary school student, one of my math teachers was a graduate from a top university, and has a prestige among peers for his high academic level. However, his pedagogy is so abstract that few students can comprehend it, for this reason, he couldn’t be evaluated to be successful teacher. Consequently, students, who are direct feelers of a teachers’ performance, are highly qualified to evaluate it.
Furthermore, another obligation of teacher, especially the primary school teacher, is to instill high moral value to the new generation, which exerts profound influences of our society. Teacher’s performances in this aspect, however, cannot be evaluated by other teachers sufficiently. According to a recent survey conducted by Boston University among a group of people succeed in various realms, a large percent of the subjects indicate that their first teachers have posed a far-reaching effect on their future life. A Teacher, whose everyday behavior inspires students, is the initial role model. Consequently, performances of them can be evaluated by no one, except the students.
Finally, it’s impossible to eliminate injustice if the teachers’ performance is merely evaluated by their colleagues. This phenomenon is universal in universities, and some specific groups are suffering from it. As an example, the foreign teachers, are sometime marginalized by their peers, and are deprived of promotion opportunities. Compared with colleagues, students are generally fairer since they have no profit conflicts with teachers. Therefore, if students are allowed to take part in the evaluation of teachers, contradictions among teachers could be reduced.
From what has been discussed above, we can safely draw the conclusion that reform is urgent to involve appraises from students into the evaluation of teachers, and it’s highly recommend that certain authorities implement proper polices to realize it. |
