i am from industry of education working for a british university with 5 years experience , i have ielts 7 and plan to take gmat soon, i guess 700 would be my level , how is my situation? as i know very few people from education go to MBA ,and is IElts a weakneas for applying ? hope to have your reply ....by the way Rice would be my priority choice ~~~cheers

你的背景比较特殊。 我们学校确实有个REEP program, 是针对教育产业的， 而且今年夏天有大约5个同学为一家education 的小咨询公司做咨询。具体的我不是很清楚。你未来的职业规划是什么？ 是做K-12还是大学？ 虽然我对教育产业不了解， 但至少我觉得这两者应该是截然不同的吧？
anyway， 先全力以赴把GT考了， （IELTS能不能用， 最好直接上我们的招生网站查下吧？）

奖学金听上去很吸引人啊，而且职业方向有consulting是我的目标。前辈快快透露什么样的背景比较合适。本人软件工程本科 GPA3.4 Gmat 710 T还没考
5年500强软件外企工作经验
3.5年工程师（1.5年国内+2年美国onsite）
1.5年售前顾问<偏销售>（零售行业）经验  

不知道怎么样？

my 2 cents here only for reference: IT +一些商科背景还是很适合做consulting的， 不过我这里说得consulting不是MBB， 而是像deloitte, accenture, PWC这类立足IT consulting， 帮助processimprovement的firm。

我是IT背景的，其实我现在有机会直接转到我们公司的consulting，也就是楼主所说的process improvement 的IT consulting.但是薪水和其他的同事差一大截，主要原因就是他们有MBA而我没有。等候IT 背景的前辈来解答。

还是我继续来回答你吧。你以后的职业打算是怎样？ 继续做consulting么？中国人在美国做consulting， 还是要先过语言文化关。 我不知道你是要在美国还是回中国， 如果要会中国的consulting firm， 基本没戏。
我觉得你可以考虑rice。 各大firm的休斯顿office， 虽然不把rice作为core school (基本以UT为主）， 但每年总来面试看人。
当然， 能不能拿到面试， 还有Offer看你自己了。 我知道我们有个印度同学， 之前是做IT consulting， 基本上成为consulting面霸， 各大行都请他去吃饭聊天， 可惜他本人对consulting实在提不起兴趣， 也就作罢了。

今年毕业的三个大陆籍: 1个McKinsey， 1个回国貌似是asset management，另外一个目前仍处在面试阶段。还有一个美国身份，也是去了manangement consulting。

generally speaking, 之前毕业的大陆校友，据我观察，基本留在美国，从事金融行业居多，也有consulting。

单纯看2011大陆学生的就业有失偏颇，因为直至2011届， rice每年所受的大陆学生不过2，3个而已，样本很小。我个人觉得我们这届或许可以更有代表性。我们2012届，一共8人，可以说都找到了不错的实习，包括有: management consulting (1) , assetmanagement(1), oil&gas corporate(4), hi-tech product mgt(1)， gaming (1)。

我后面还会说到我对这个问题的理解。 但简单的说，对于非top20 MBA的大陆学生，想通过mba换行，基本非常难，我们这届的实习也是基本立足于原来的行业，换function以及提升自己的position。

请问dingxiang童鞋， 4个去oil company的中国学生，没有一个去oil Major的么？ 都是些中小石油公司，或者石油相关咨询公司？ 是说那些大major 都会来campus recruiting 但是就是不要国际学生么。。那么依你之见，oil背景的中国学生，在rice MBA毕业后 ，如果还在oil 行业内找的话。有那些公司可选？  另外，主要哪些公司来rice 招人，算rice的校园招聘大户？（查了business week 偏偏rice没写top recruiter company 只写了energy 行业占就业总数的15%。）

另外2010去McKinsey的那么同学的情况，你了解么？ 貌似，M7毕业生进McKinsey 都不容易，号称McKinsey 只prefer 几个core school 。。。。你看人家rice毕业生不是照样进去了嘛。。。所以，还是个人能力牛啊。。只不过想知道具体肿么个牛法？ 是premba就是做管理咨询的经验丰富吗？ 还是数学神童，一天工作20个小时不觉得累？还是在美国读的MIT本科且跟美国人一样的语言文化能力，能把老美忽悠喽。。。 所以，弄懂这个童鞋的情况，对我们大家很有借鉴和指导意义！！

2cents about consulting in Rice：
去McK的那位师姐， 很受我们崇拜的。 这么说吧， consulting 招MBA去做associate， 不单单是要找肯吃苦的， 更是看重你之前的工作经验， 最好是有比较solid的行业经验。 这位师姐就是。中国人在美国做consulting， 口语/presentation左不过老美， 靠啥来卖？ 当然只有丰富的工作经验啦。 人家老美以前做老师/military， 读个MBA可以去做IB, 做consulting, 中国人可能么？
其实， 虽然rice不是什么consulting 牛逼的学校（因为美国人里面聪明的都去oil&gas或者IB 了), 由于在休斯顿各大firm都有office， 所以， 每年都会来rice看看有没有candidate。这些firm不在school做宣讲，直接去career office看大家的简历，线下联系些好苗子。今年我们实习， 我所知道的，进了1个McK， 2个E&Y， 1个PWC。这些人中， 只有1个以前是consulting。 其他3个都是没有consulting背景。

当然， 不是说没有扎实的工作经验， 就一定没戏了。 consulting 和IB一样， 都要靠networking。 我们中国同学中有个女孩子， network with all consulting staff from day one。 最后MBB面试都拿到了。
所以， 还是事在人为。 别指望学校能在后面推着你走， 要问自己到底有多想要，才会把学校的资源善加利用， 达到自己的目标。

career report for class 2010 (I guess the one for 2011 is still in progress, but definetly 2011 is so much better than 2010). One special thing about Rice Career report is it specifiy who goes to which company, so from that, we can roughly see how international students perform.

实话实说，是因为Rice 群发了邮件才了解这个学校的，我是在校生， 本来是只想申请硕士的，可是看到Rice的MBA真的很诱人，所以，我想问，对于没有工作经验的人，能申请到MBA嘛？或者说，我这样没有工作经验的读MBA有意义嘛？

感谢你对rice的兴趣。
就我个人意见， 我不赞成没有工作经验就读MBA，除非你在校的经历特别丰富，那么可以考虑哈佛的2+2. 至于其他的top school.没有工作经验，基本不会鼓励。尤其现在的大环境不好，学校招生会注意学生的就业难度。
虽然rice是个很不错的学校， 但是不管你申什么学校， 别为了上学而上学， 也别为了奖学金而选择某个学校。
申请MBA如此，申请其他硕士也如此。

RICE 的 MBA 项目 FAQ中指出 可以接受 托福 PTE 或者雅思三者之一
但是没有列出具体的分数要求。 可以根据您个人的了解做简单介绍吗？

你好， 不好意思回复晚了。 我本人是考托福的。 但既然可以接受这三个， 那么我觉得没有区别。 可是雅思7分我不了解相当于托福几分？ 一般国外比较好的mba都要求托福100分以上。
另外， 别太纠结于语言的分数， 不知道你G的分数怎样？ 如果G够高，那么托福或者雅思应该不会给你加分或者减分。

其实读MBA的一部分原因是想转行，以后还是想做财务这块，不知道RICE的MBA会计方向出来在当地工作好找吗？去会计事务所的多么？还是有去企业的机会比较多？

为何不在国内转呢？ accounting这个东西还是比较本土化的， 即使你是中国的CPA在美国还是要重新考吧？
另外， corp finance/accounting这种职位大部分是给老美的， 我基本没听说中国人毕业直接做这块儿的。而且说不好听点儿， 这种职位真的未必需要mba。四大我们学校基本是不是收做审计，而是做咨询以及fianncial advisory。
我不想打击你， 但你做mkt research远比accounting/corp finance有竞争力的多啊，为何不能先静心做几年把某块市场做熟了， 然后再问自己要不要出国， 出国干嘛。

当然， 我也只是根据你的帖子泛泛而谈， 你具体为何要出国我不知道，也无从judge，只是我觉得你的背景不错， 稳扎稳打几年再谋划也不迟啊。

问一下楼主一个比较弱智的问题。本人G只有650分，由于时间较紧张，正犹豫要不要三战。这个分数会不会去Rice是不是没什么优势啊？本人属于大龄人士（大于30），普通大学+211硕士，7－8年财务和税务经验。
本人对Rice还是很感兴趣的，因为工作在石油行业，公司总部在Houston，莫名其妙的亲近感。

有时间肯定要考G啊。 坛子里面关于G分数的讨论很多， 基本符合现实。我感觉你的工作经验是够了， 但是不能因为G就拖后腿吧，说句老实话不要以为rice排名不算靠前，就能随便申请了。 Rice这两年在美国很热门， 据我们admission director讲，在2010年度（也就是今年刚入学的）报考人数又创新高，增长31%，平均入学G分数是673.

Please see below for informationon the Full-Time Class of 2013:

·        Applicationsincreased 31% to 715, an eight yearhigh.  Based on discussions with peer programs, our application growth wasabove the industry average for this year.  A portion of the growth can beattributed to the Rice MBA program’s appearance in the Business Week top-30rankings.
·        The growth inapplications allowed the admissions committee to improve selectivity(the percent of applicants that are admitted to the program) to 25%. This is the best selectivity on record for the Jones School and is asignificant improvement over last year’s 36%.  Based on 2011 U.S. News andWorld Report Rankings, our selectivity of 25% is on par with:  Duke,Virginia, Michigan, Cornell and several other top 20 programs.
·        Of those admitted,approximately 63% joined the Jones School – another best ever metric andone that sets us apart from peer programs.  This yield is better than allbut six of the top 50 programs based on the most recent rankings.  Ouryield this year is particularly impressive given that we also grew the domesticpopulation from outside Texas to 32%, the highest percentage onrecord.  This is an indication that we are becoming more of a destinationschool rather than a regional player.
·        Average GMATimproved one point over last year to 673,median was unchanged at 680; Average GPA:  3.4, flat compared tolast year.
·        Diversity:  
Females - The class is 26% female, a decline from last year.  Basedon conversations with peer schools, most programs saw a significant decrease inapplications from women this year.  Because of that, the market forfemales (domestic females in particular) became highly competitive.  Theindustry perspective is that when the economy has been in decline, females optto take a more cautious approach to making the investment in an MBA.
UnderrepresentedMinorities - The population ofunderrepresented minorities declined slightly to 13% but it is still amongstthe best of the top tier MBA programs.  
International - Much of this year’s application growth came from theinternational market, which is a signal that our global reputation isincreasing.  The Class of 2013 is 22% international.  Theadmissions committee became increasingly selective with this market due to theongoing challenges with employment visa sponsorship post-graduation. Also, there was a strategic focus on Latin America to have a broaderrepresentation of students and to capitalize on its proximity to Houston. The Class of 2013 is 10% Latin American with students hailing from Brazil,Columbia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela.
