8.3原创英文版JJ Listening + Reading (including Q&A)

7.12 reading 14, listening 28.

Listening:

1.       Student goes to ask professor for help to join an internet event. (Q: what’s the purpose of this student? To ask for help) The student works for the student government and are organizing an event. (Q: why did the student hold this event? Do not get it.) The professor cannot go, and recommend another professor. Then they talk about the student’s term paper. The professor advised him to use the event as a background to write.

2.       Glass making: Egypt raw glass was imported from M… but Egptian has its own glass-processing factory, only making glass objects. One student asked: Egyptian made glasses, then did not make glasses? The professor clarify that Egyptian made glass objects but not glass. (Q: why the professor said so? A: to indicate that he has said clearly in the previous talk. ) Then the speaking talking about the process of making glass objects, 1, crush, 2, mix, 3, heat …. ( there is one question about this process, 3 procedures need to be put into order) The speaker further talks about the function of the glass objects: not for daily use, but for royal family or nobleman, for gift. (Q: what is the glass object used for, two choices? I choose maintain relationship, and used by higher glass.)

3.       Biology Class: Classification: There are normally two types: X & Y. Aristotle classified all things into two categories: animals, which are moving and plants which do not move. Then microscope was invented. Under microscope, original unmoving plants can move, so there are 3rd category. Then a Man appeared, he gave each thing two names so that everything can be identified uniquely. (Q: …) Further talking about bacteria, finally it is virus, which is very difficult to classify. There is one organism called ExtreXXX, which can live in either in boiling water or cold ocean, nobody knows how to classify it. (Q:….) Comments: this section is not difficult, but forget most questions.)

4.       Conversation between student and employee in the maintenance house department: workers are fixing the outer layer of the library, which made noise and dust. The student lived in a dormitory facing the library. He complained about the working. Because it is summer, he will sleep with window open so that the dust and noise come in. Many student do not feel good about it. Q ( it just not a pretty picture?, what does the student mean? It means that many students feel frustrated about the work.). Then student questioned why they work during summer holidays. The employee replied that the schedule has been set months before and approved by a committee. (There is one answer is related to the approval of this project.) The man suggested to work in the other side of library (Q: what did man suggest?). The employee did not agree but gave another solution to let these students to move to another building. The student is happy. However, the employee need to check with the housing office first. (Q: what will the employee probably do next?)

5.       American literature class: main topic is about realism, which is different from romanticism but similar to science and philosophy. (Q: what is similar to realism? Science and philosophy) Then talked a large part about realism. Then, two writers are mentioned, with their names on the screen, one is Richard XXX, the other is Mark Twins. Richard is famous after death, he wrote a book. XXX (question: how this book make him/her famous, I did not get it and guess this is one of the first realism novels in US history). Mark Twins also wrote a book XXXX, after this book, the true American realism came into being. (Question: infer what happened before the book: Answer: no true American realism.

6.       Petroleum and Gas

Petroleum was made millions years ago, mainly by single-cell marine plant. So, the oil company normally search in the sea or site close to the shore for petrol. (Q:   why they search there? Because made by marine plant). Normally, Petrol and gas are mixed together. So, they were searched together, and gas may help to pump petrol. (Q: why company search together? Give two reasons). One student asked one question about dead oil and live oil. (Qwhat’s that?. A: dead oil is oil without gas. Live oil is oil with gas.). There is common misconception that petrol existed underground in a pool, however, it is not, it normally just stay within rocks. (Q: why mention pool? A: because it is common misconception). The professor further talked about the application of oil. They can be used in many field. For example, some fiber in your clothes may be synthic material from oil residual. (Q: why professor mention this? A: to illustrate the wide-scope application of oil residual)

Reading:

Many words questions:

Precarious: insecure:

Partake: consume

Explicit: obvious

Modest: simple

blablabla

Passage 1: development of instrumental music.

before 16th century, people just play music for its own sake, or 美学 rather than political religious reason.

Comments: the first reading passage is very difficult for me. I spent 4 minutes solving the 1st question. But still failed. Have to give up temporarily and start with 2nd question. Many new words appear in the first passage; also per my understanding, the passage is not logically coherent. When I finished the last question and go back to the 1st one. Fortunately, done!

Passage 2: Pine and Jay (one bird)

Paragraph 1: introduce the concept of Co-evolution, which means species rely on each other to evolve. Such as… one example of Fungi and a plant.

Paragraph 2: Pine and Jay seem not to have such a co-evolution relationship. As the seed of pine is very easy to be found and Partaken(vocabulary =Consumed) by Jay. The seed of pine is full of energy which means delicious to Jay. So, from this point of view, only Jay benefit from the relationship, while pine does not. Q: what’s the function of this paragraph? A: it presents a puzzle which will be solved later.

Paragraph 3: Actually pine will also gain from such a relationship. As the Jay cannot eat all the seeds, it will bury the excess one and re-dig them out during the winter time. However, not all buried seeds will be dug out. So, this will help the pine seed to germinate.

Paragraph 4: there is one problem within their relationship: suppose that the pine always produces abundant seeds which will feed the Jay. The Jay’s population will be enlarged and will endanger the pine as more pine seeds will be consumed. How to solve this issue? The pine will not produce a lot of seeds each year, instead, they will only produce abundant seeds every a few years (maybe 6 years). So during the peak year, more seeds will be buried; while during the barren year, less seeds will be made and some jays may be starved/dead therefore controlling their population.

Paragraph 5:…..

Comments: be scared by the 1st passage, this one was done quickly. About 5 minutes left for the last question. Then go back to review and spent too much time on the word Partake, which means consume/eat.

Rising Maya Civilization:

Maya people have big centers, which, however, does not have a large population within in. Instead, some priests, noble and other classy people only stay there for specific reasons –religious and so on. The big centers do not like urban city despite the high buildings within it.

Comments: this one was done quicker than 2nd. 7 minutes left for last 2 questions. When finishing all, suddenly found the REVIEW function can go back to the 2nd passage. Baga! do not know it as Barren seems not have this function.
