我之前也看到有人问这个问题，但是我还是有一些疑问，我觉得这个there are是多余的啊，我认为应该是 ： 有 （比爷爷住在孩子或孙子家的）家庭多三倍的（孩子、孙子住在爷爷家的）家庭。总是感觉，有XX家庭比有XX家庭多三倍这样说不对啊~~~

LZ, there are一点都不多余，而且是必须的，如果没有了 there are，那么A recent United States Census Bureaureport shows that之后就不是句子了。

恩恩，there are是不多余的，但是我的问题是，之前不是已经有了there are 了，之后对比的那个household就不用再加there are了，因为我觉得再加there are就是多余的啊~~~

我明白你的意思了。
在这里，我们必须要明白这里as.....as...是什么结构，它是个比较状语结构，在这个比较状语结构下，第二个as是个连词应该引导状语从句。但很多情况下这个状语从句是省略了动词部分，因为和主句的谓语部分相同。比如这一句：Eyes are as eloquent as lips(are).

但there are 句子结构不一样，它的谓语部分不独立，因此在这种状语从句中可能是无法省略的。比如这一句：While there are almost as many definitions of history as there are historians, modern practice most closely conforms to one that sees history as the attempt to recreate and explain the significant events of the past.

当然也有as....as..后面接名词的不是比较状语从句的，这是另一种情况了，与本题无关。
