化工PhD转finance，恳请给位牛人给建议

请教各位大牛高见，

  本人北美化工top20毕业，在Pharma biotech工作2年（29岁），做project management，工作主要就是move新药进入临床。工作难有大发展，几经思索决定申MBA，打算转finance方向，未奢望入投行，普通bank，funds或企业均可。希望之后能做化工、制药，生物方面的financial analysis 工作，不想让PhD完全没用了。但目前门外汉，equity/risk research 方向，corporate finance 具体分得不是很清楚。我应该定位在何处?虽然网上查阅不少，但还是完全无头绪。

  目前家在Ohio，这附近企业不少，首选Ohio state，不知几率如何？另外，Undergraduate GPA 3.8，graduate GPA 3.95，无家庭身份之忧，有一幼童，父母照看，领导工作稳定支持我再发展。但劣势是要重考GMAT，下定决心的有些晚，不知还来得及吗。恳请诸位不吝赐教。

PhD+CFA 进 Equity Research足够了。我一个好朋友就是这样的。

Hey there,
Well I think you can be VERY successful. You are coming from a totally fantastic industry with great grades in both your diplomas. If your work experience is strong as well, I think you should do quite well. Obviously you will have to get that GMAT out of the way, but you seem like a very smart person, so I’m sure you should be fine!


Fisher is the best school in Ohio, but if you do well on your GMAT you may want to open your options to other schools and states as well,

Thank you so much for everybody. I am working right now at the firm and couldn't type Chinese. I take a little time to response, and my boss couldn't see me, haha .....
[nscdream] gets the point, I am really fresh to this area, no systematic training , no related networking, almost nothing. I need to plug in!!!
Currently I will focus on the application, hopefully i will get some good feedback and have the opportunity to break in .
Welcome different opinions and perspective.

撸主我给你讲一个例子你就明白：

基金不关心你背景是什么，如果你不是本科生从零开始，它只关心你能不能够独立cover stocks。我从没听说过只有CFA就能cover stocks的人。CFA虽然讲得细，但是实战不足。你把一个公司的10-K, 10-Q扔给一个只有CFA的人，他不可能"build a full-blown FCF model with reasonable assumptions, all head-line, bottom-line numbers tied out together"。说得难听点，他可能连10-K和conference call transcripts从哪里找，怎么和management交流了解信息，怎么用sell side research reports都不知道。

MBA不是就一定能帮助你cover stocks, 但是一个好的MBA提供的stock pitches,  case studies, 课程，校友交流可以让你接近能够独立cover stocks的水平。

你没有见到有CFA L3的中国人数学物理PhD有多少
化学生物这些基于实验没有很强QUANT基础的PhD没法和他们争
更不要说这些QUANT的PhD有CFA Level3顺利转行的也是极少数。
当然，我是指数学物理的PhD博后拿CFA回国内跳。在美国跳几率不大于TOP30以外的中国MBA进高盛

谢过楼上诸位，开心还有同道中人。的确，生化背景在美就业面有限也是迫使我调整的原因之一，MBA focus on finance，可做analyst，也可涉猎相关领域。CFA有用，可锦上添花，但想靠它入门很难。我会尽力多尝试，transit总是很辛苦。

for LZ's purpose a Phd and CFA is more than enough, but again if you are able to do more go for it.

I personally don't see a point in doing MBA if you really want to become an analyst, it is not even relevant. CFA will be the best choice and maybe master of finance will help too.

Quite different. I have many friends with PhD/CFA L3 or PhD/CPA
Still they could not make the career transition happen. Although nowadays an MBA is not as powerful as it was, it's still better than CFA L3 for career switch.
For sure, PhD/CFA/MBA would be much better.
