关于申请，关于 就业的一些疑问

大家好，第一次在这里发帖，求轻拍。

lz去年新加坡工科本科一等荣誉毕业，现在职bulge bracket之一做finance。
由于工科背景，并且实习经验不够丰富，现在很难跳出finance部门，于是决定去美国读商科master加强一些背景（很牵强听起来）。当然部分原因是想在美国生活体验一段时间，还有就是看中名牌学校的资源（alumni，career office）。

想请教有经验的师兄师姐几个问题：
1. Carnegie Mellon的MFE排名最高，就业怎么样？出来是不是大多做quants/traders？
2. MIT MsF水不水？就业怎么样？employment report我看了过去几年的，感觉不是很出彩啊，而且学费和one-year MBA一样。
3. 想做corporate finance/capital market是不是读master of finance更沾边一些？
4. 当然我承认大多学校的master都是一个赚钱的理由，可是还是想问career office能帮到多少？
5. 毕业以后要留下工作的话visa是不是最大的障碍？
6. 看很多人考完GMAT后发心理历程贴，看见很多750,760,770....现在GMAT inflation是不是很严重了？前一阵杀完G，740还算不算亮点？
7. 如果明年入学，已经有两年工作经验，读master是不是有点高龄？很多同学都是本科毕业直接去读。
8. 有推荐的项目的话，不胜感激！

Well obviously post-experience programs are the better match for you, but even good so-called "pre experience" programs might fit. You are not sooooo old as to rule them out, (and often people have a few years of experience, just not in finance)

And HBS rocked, and Boston is one of the coolest towns in the US (and also cold, very very cold...)

Re 7, it would be quite a news to me if you meant for Master instead of MBA.. kick off grad school after 5 years exp, wouldn't that be super late? unless you're talking abt post-exp programs e.g. LBS/Oxf.

8. any programs with high placement rate in corp finance/cap mkt.

Btw, how was your time in HBS? Boston treat you well?

Hello there! Lots of good questions here. So let me get to them one by one:

Tepper is a fantastic place. And it is fantastic because the job prospects are fantastic. So if you can get in, by all means, go.

Also a  great program. One of the best in the country.

This is a very good question. It depends a bit on what you want to do. Although there is a lot of overlap between MBA and MF in the finance field, a Masters in finance is a lot more technical and mathematical than an MBA, so if it is that side of finance that interests you than an MF can be exactly what you need. On the other hand, if management is what gets you going, then an MBA would be better.

I don't think so. If you go to a good school and get a good offer, you should be able to get help getting your visa.

Actually, two years is maybe TOO LITTLE, not too much. Most folks will have about five years experience.

Not sure what you mean here. What sort of projects are you looking for?

能理解. 轉不走, 更不想多待幾年原位, 因為inefficient gain of working of experience, 寧願現在想法子轉......不過兩年經驗, BB, 雖然是finance, 都足夠stand out from a pool of candidate in per experience program (since more only have internship)

If I were you (but ignoring personal interest a bit):
1. MBA, 不想等太長......到時working experience quality不夠人來, can understand, though quite some MBA are from big 4 and etc....工作本身好好的去MBA的估計不高比例 (哪有這個時間和需要...)
2. MFE will be a choice, the first condition is that you will like (and able) quantitative method, and quant trade risk and related is a field you want
3. Master in Finance, quite a general solution, good title and networking
4. Accounting & Finance, a bit similar to (3), but more accounting is good especially for ER, LBO, M&A modeling and etc.

2. 關鍵在興趣.....工程背景, 1st hon, 不論是NUS/NTU都夠用的了.
真的要申的話, 把top的那一堆全申一個遍就是了.
from princeton MSF, NYU MSMF, CMU MSCF, UBC MFE, Columbia MSFE, Cornell, Chicago MSMF, Columbia MAFN, Rugters MSMF, UCLA MFE, maybe also Baurch and etc.
要global就把UK那五間(Ox MSCFM, Imperical Math, LSE FM, Cambridge MPhil Fina Eng, Warwick MScFM), 還有the best 2 in EU(ETH, Paris VI), 要不NUS/NTU的MFE都不錯

3. 問題是好的MSF不多......尤其US, MIT之外, top 15 b-school冇一有MSF (Columbia MSc Fin & econ很勉強算是有關), tier 2倒是有一堆如BU(還是BC??), Vandy等等可以看看.
UK的倒是可以考慮LSE, Oxford, Imperial...
(!!)當然還有post experience的如LBS MiF, or maybe also Cambridge one, which possibly have the best place for networking. (P.S. US沒有top的post-expereicne MSF, they all go MBA(Finance))
The issue lies here is.........for a more corprate finance (or more soft finance) role, it's more difficult to land a job an as international student.

4. If I were you I will not consider accounting.....太多的accountant, with experience from big 4, wanna to go into finance.....
and engineering guy have no advantage for competition.

关于master和MBA的选择，很多人都说应该再工作几年去读MBA。可是MBA看重的难道不是diversified background吗？结合目前job mkt（至少新加坡/香港金融业）以及lz的水平来看，想做除finance/operation之外的工作非常难，而手握4、5年finance部门相对单一的工作经历如何能竞争过consulting，IB，PE等行业急流勇退的人们啊。
lz已经无法在无聊的finance部门多待咯....MBA现在看还有些远，只能把握当下。

个人认为master的弊端是have to start all over again from bottom of the chain，不过对于像lz一样铁了心要换部门的人来说，牺牲一两年的工作经验是值得的吧...40岁还是45岁当上MD doesn't really matter.

请问你说的tier 1另一家叫MSF的MFE是哪个?

Acadmically, yes (indeed yes for 99.99% MSF)
But the key point is…what you want
If your target is something more soft position then…
Just like that no one will say mba is bad since it's 水
finance program are always expensive…e.g. you may see also lbs mif are just slightly cheaper than they mba

Or some account and finace or mba
But the major problem lies in visa and culture difference

5. Also lanauage and culture difference
In general the more technical it is, the weaker the local are, and hence the more reason the company have to sponsor a visa
i.e. corp fina type of role is not a good choice if one want to work in us as an international student

7. Experience is something good or bad.
More likely good than bad though.
If you really want to go to US, and for finance (corp fina and etc……) , you should seriously consider to go one or two year later for a MBA instead of MSF.
US tier 1 當中，只有一家有MSF, 還有一家有個叫MSF的MFE…

P.S. solid engineering background, experience in finance, OP can consider MFE indeed, especially if:
- you like number and quant method
- you plan to apply with only 0-2 year of experience (so call per experience level)
school list is simple for this one…nyu cmu princeton ubc columbia cornell and etc…
