OG 116 except为什么是介词

(A) excepting for

(B) except in

(C) but except in

(D) but excepting for

(E) with the exceptionof

为什么这里except 是介词呢。介词后面是不能跟介词短语in the domains 的啊。只有连词才能跟介词短语么不是。
求解~~~

我的笔记里面写着介词后面只能跟名词，代词，v-ing。except是特例可以加介词短语吗？
