Considering that universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study or should not force students to take any courses other than those that will help prepare them for jobs in their chosen fields. Although both of the views are reasonable in some way, we students and teachers should take more factors into consideration, those opinions are too limited.
To learn in college, it is plausible that college education allow students to learn more knowledge or prepare for future job. Nevertheless, when student graduate, they will either get a job or pursuit for further study. People’s time are always limited, focus on one thing make students realize more clearly what they can do and how to achieve it. Different students have different choices in the future, if they make a full preparation earlier, they’ll become more easy to face the challenge.
However, suppose universities put both of the proposals into practice, can they reach their initial goal? Here comes a serious question. For the first suggestion, not every school has enough facilities to meet the needs of their student. To do so, it would cost a lot of money, these funds may gain more in other field, like updating the current old facilities. Even they have, can they guarantee every student will take these courses?Students only have three to four years to achieve their dreams during the college time, they are too tired to learn various courses they want. Furthermore, some students have no interest in some certain academic field, if someone force them to learn some knowledge dull to them, how can we say a university make a terrific plan for his student?
As for the second suggestion, spending four year time just preparing an excellent job after college seems too narrow for student. Nowadays, students who study science courses have to learn something related to philosophy, students who make researches in literature may learn math as well. Only in this way can we students get a balance development and study more effectively. What's more, since job today have been divided more precise than before, we aren’t able to predict what your specific professional direction is before long. Once specialized knowledge we learn in college become useless at that time, which means it is a waste of time in college.
Therefore, in order to make the best use of the four year college time, students should learn to find their interests. It is interest that guards people where to go. Learn what you like and be sure what kind of person you want to be. Opportunities are always waiting for us!
