OG12 87: In an effort to reduce their inventories, Italian vintners have cut prices; their wines have been priced to sell, and they are.

correct sentence:

are priced to sell, and they do.

国外instructor的解释:完全没有问题:贴上

The most important rule we need to remember for this question is one of the rules of ellipsis:
If you omit a word in a sentence, that word must have already appeared in the sentence.
In this question, the original version, if "un-ellipsed," would look like this:
In an effort to reduce their inventories, Italian vintners have cut prices; their wines have been priced to sell, and they are selling.
You will notice that the ellipsed word is selling, but this word does NOT appear in the sentence before.
In the correct answer choice, we use do to substitute sell. Remember, do can be used to replace a verb phrase, as in the sentence, She thinks I don't care about my grades, but I do. In this sentence, do replaces care.

卧槽后面那个学生提的问题我也无解了:(求救根源!!!!!)

Beaded wedding gowns are so expensive because the seamstress still pursues her art as they have for centuries, by hand-stringing each bead and then knotting each thread individually to achieve a secure attachment for each bead.

(A) the seamstress still pursues her art as they have
(B) the seamstress still pursues her art as she has
(C) seamstresses still pursue their art as they have
(D) seamstresses still pursue their art as was done
(E) the seamstress still pursues her art as has been done

The answer is C.

The complete construction will be

Beaded wedding gowns are so expensive because seamstresses still pursue their art as they have (done) , by hand-stringing each bead and then knotting each thread individually to achieve a secure attachment for each bead

'done' should replace the perfect tense 'pursuded'. But 'persuded' is not appearing in the sentence before..

-- by 会员 DUKB24 (2012/9/4 16:25:29)

嗯,不错,不错,指代都是相对原则。不是rule。犯了刚刚帖子里一样的错误了,baby姐姐写的你看懂了么?能帮我解释下么?

首先说下这题正确选项的句意怎么理解,我也是查了好多资料才知道的,而我觉得咱很多中国同学可能对“正确句子里they指代什么”理解有误,我最早也是。

To sell can be used to refer to the SELLER:
The stores sells many books.

To sell can also be used to refer to the ITEM BEING SOLD:
The books in the store sell well.
The conveyed meaning here is than many people purchase the books.

http://www.beatthegmat.com/italian-vintners-t114304.html#480393

所以这个句子的意思就是:
Their wines are priced to sell, and they (= the wines) do (sell).

Manhattan书上有个类似的句子:
Their cars are designed to inspire envy, and they do.

其次,关于涉及助动词的省略,看Ron这里的解释,非常详细
http://www.beatthegmat.com/soar-t62473-15.html

简单说,
... I have.   (have verbed)
... I do.     (verb)
... I did.    (verb --past tense)
... I will.    (will verb)
... I can.    (can verb)
... I could.     (could verb)
etc.

也许到头来你会发现最好的方法,还是把这几个正确句子读熟,就有感觉了。

这道题其实和og 85 有相似点。
以下摘自 Ron:
if you have a parallel construction involving tensed verbs, and the tensed verb is EXACTLY THE SAME in both (or all, if there are more than 2) parts of the construction, then you may omit the verb in all but the first part.
for instance:
the rain was torrential and the wind fierce.
in this case, we're allowed to omit the second 'was', because it's identical to the 'was' in the first part.

而这道题呢就是一个逆过程,它已经做了省略→动词补充出来就必须 exactly the same.

这句话我们可不可以这么来看,and 暗示一种平行结构。
their wines are priced to sell, and they do (sell).小M上讲说当代词出现在一个平行结构当中时,第二个句子中的代词趋于指代和第一个句子中地位相同的对象,特别是主语的情况。
在这里是符合的。
they 指的是 their wines,并且前面有分号,这个句子相对独立,they 如果指酒商是不合理的,因为代词指代不能 touch inside.

希望有帮助...

疑问:不是说只能指代同一东西么?以前也有题目:ITS和IT指代不一致不能选。如果they指代酒,theirs就指代了酒商,完全不对啊。

....从句意来理解,they are priced to sell后面如果指代reduce不就是废话了么?

继续求解helping verb这两题的自相矛盾

为什么我觉得那个do是指的reduce,求指点。
-- by 会员 sawayisa (2012/7/28 18:40:21)

我也这样认为,毕竟都是一个主语的动作,不应只局限于谓语动词
-- by 会员 zhengjiahan (2012/7/30 9:31:16)

reduce是分号前的句子,分号的作用是隔开两个相互之间有联系的句子,所以分号前后各有一套主谓
第二个主句的helping verb应该是不可以指代第一个主句的成分的...
-- by 会员 DUKB24 (2012/7/30 9:39:17)

额、、、隔开两个相互之间有联系的句子,在句意上应该还是整体的吧、、
