The vice president predict that installing software to monitor employees’ Internet use will prevent employees from wasting time, thereby increasing productivity and improving overall profits. To support his/her argument, the vice president cites a recent survey, and points that monitoring software is the best way to reduce the number of hours employees spend on personal or recreational activities. While the recommendation is plausible at the first glance, close scrutiny reveals that the argument is unconvincing in many regards.



As for the survey the author cites, a question that needs to be answered is whether the survey is reliable enough before I can accept any conclusion the author arrives at based on it. However, the national survey may not apply to the situation in Climpson. It is likely that the employees in Climpson are seldom even never using company computers for personal activities, the author have not investigate the real situation in their Climpson. And the assumption based on the national survey may be biased, one that the majority employees in Climpson used the company for their personal activities indeed. All the advice are rely on the “fact”, which is much hasty. Only if the survey are reliable and representative, can it use to make a conclusion and back the argument.



Additionally, even if the majority employees in Climpson use the computers for some personal or recreational activities, another question is on the way: can implementing electronic monitoring of employees’ Internet make the productivity in a counterproductive degree. Admittedly, the electronic monitor software may work without side effects to the feeling of employees. Yet, it is also likely that employees consider this kind of conduct as a sign of the company’s distrust, and lack a full love for the company, thus do their work halfheartedly, resulting less productivity. The author offers no evidence that can deal with the question. Without accounting for and ruling out this and other alternative explantions, the author cannot bolster his/her recommendation.



Futhermore, even if his deduction and inference made in the argument above are true, the author are still fails to perform a feasibility analysis that install the electronic monitoring software is the best way to reduce the number of hours employees spend on personal or recreational activities. Are there a better method to achive a same or better effect? Perhaps a more competetive mechanism for prize can encorage employees to spare their every efforts to increase their productivity. Perhaps a rule of monitoring with each other may help. Still perhaps internet for some particular web such as some games webs, some shoppingwebs,are limited to visit, thus hours spend in this particular webs are naturely decreased to zero. A choice between these method may depend on more details. The author’s reasoning are definitely flawed unless the author can convince me these and other possible scenarios are unlikely.



Improving the employees productivity is a crucial factor for a company’s progress. However, the recommendation the author made is invalid and inconvincing, based on above analysis. They cannot expect a improved situation of high productivity if they just monitoring the software. Careful analysis of all the respects I have presented is the best first step to achieve their expectation.
