142 Claim: Colleges and universities should specify all required courses and eliminate elective courses in order to provide clear guidance for students. Reason: College students—like people in general—prefer to follow directions rather than make their own decisions.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based.
From the claim ,it's suggested that compulsory courses in the college, with the purpose of guiding students clearly, should be specified at the cost of the elective courses. From my point of view, I couldn't stand for this claim.
First of all, the reason that college students are more likely to follow directions than to make their choice is surly unwarranted. Indeed, with explosive numbers of information puring in the students' minds and crashing into the students' eyes everyday , most of the students have gradually equipped themselves with the ability to tell right from wrong and make their own choices. For example, paying enough attention to the current affairs , the students exploit Internet to give voice to their insightful opinion and veil the inequity, violence, etc. Moreover, the enthusiasm among the students to bring their ideas into reality rises exponentially . Students in growing numbers would choose to build up their own company rather than find a boring job after they graduate from school .IT industry has seen countless typical successes. By choose to realize his dream, Mark, the founder of Facebook , makes his own steps towards great business success. By choose to follow his heart , Palichi ,the founder of Google, sets up the fantastic realm.
Granted that the students prefer to follow directions, it’s not wise to cram the students with required courses without the elective courses. For one thing, that all the students receive the same courses can be counterproductive to the students’ study. Forced to take the tedious class, which is poorly appealing to them, students would possibly generate the antipathy for study, thus impeding their ordinary performance. Worse still , some may even play truant or disturb the normal order in class.
On the other hand, students have the rights to choose the courses which they are most interested in .Therefore ,it’s the duty of the school to provide the opportunity for the students’ interest development. And it is through these elective courses that students will be well guided to find their strengthen and make their vocational decision. It is in this way that the students can be imported with interdisciplinary knowledge and spark great inspiration. It is in this way that students can learn to enhance their comprehensive quality as the education aims at.
Indeed, the aim of the education, in my perspective, is to guide students to find out their life direction and to help them thrive both psychologically and physiologically. By no means can it be denied that both compulsory and elective courses play a significant role in achieving this goal. Therefore, it’s more reasonable to make a balance between them. Colleges should provide enough compulsory courses to ensure the students to master the basic knowledge for further specialized study and meanwhile give freedom for their hobby choice. Only in this way, can the students hold more flexible time for their interest building.
