C选项错误，OG里给的解释是them指代不明。虽然很多NN说除了four million people, them可以指代前面的名词.
可是前面哪里有复数名词呢？them只有可能指代four million people。
盼望牛牛们解答。

E里面的many of whom是前面people的同位语，修饰people的。

如果them没法指代前面已经很偏的修饰结构，那E里面的whom同样有这个问题啊

把C选项还原后提炼出来的句子结构是：Laos has a land area (that is***), but in Laos (with***), many of themare***.
这么看的话them就无法指代people了，因为with a population of only four million people变成了伴随成分。
这题我也很模糊呢，不知这样想对不对~

whom 只能指代人 ，充当宾格。题目中需要用一个关系代词指代people 同时位于介词of之后 所以就只能够用宾格形式的 whom而不能用who了。
凡是指代人的就用who  ，指代人的同时要使用宾格形式的就用 whom  不知道这样是否解释了你的疑惑。

这里是不是可以理解成whom如同which的用法一样，可以就近指代people而不是with....。而them是个非常严格的代词，指代的时候不能指代with短语中的people？？？

个人觉得代词的单复数形式不能作为首要的理由来逆推所指代的对象
应该是先从逻辑角度找出代词指代谁，然后判断代词的单复数是否与指代对象一致
举个例子：
前面出现了名词As（复数）B（单数）C（单数），后面出现代词them
若通过逻辑判断them指代的是B，但是B与them单复数不一致，错
若通过逻辑判断them指代的是As，而且them与As make sense，对
一点个人的看法

个人认为: 选项C中的 them 可能会指代 Laos's land area and Great Britain's land area.

比如:  Mary is Tina’s sister, and both of them are students.

them 就指代了 Mary 和 Tina.

them可以指代的东西可能并不在该句子中出现~~而whom只能就近指代。og考的就是这个差别

不是吧，我记得who 可以指代人，也可以做宾格，但是whom只能做宾格。who可以当who,和whom 用，但是whom 不能做who 用

请问你的说法的来源在哪里呢？我自己语法不是很好所以不知道你说的是不是对的。 who 还可以当whom 用啊？至少我没有这样用过。
不过GMAT语法里，我认为是不能这样用的
我是看了白勇语法，我在楼上说的内容在在白勇语法P219~有兴趣你可以看一下呀~

D ，OG有明确给出解释 and 改变句子的强调中心 使得原来的修饰成分（从句）变成了句子的主干成分（并列），这样一来句子的construction发生了变化。
