关于svo, doing我也有点困惑。OG 12th有这么个题

我想知道这里面是不是protecting做了后定了？如果是的话，那是可以理解成如果doing前面是主系表结构的话，doing就可以做后定么？
另外svo, doing中，doing除了有表伴随和结果的用法外，有没有做后定的情况？有的话该如何区分svo, doing中doing的各种用法

Comma + ___ing doesn't necessarily have to give a consequence of the preceding clause (though that is one way in which it's often used). As long as it gives some sort of description/clarification/illustration/consequence/etc. of the preceding clause, you're fine.

所以很疑惑啊，OG说protecting是揭示了item的目的，如果protecting作状语，真的有如9楼所讲的表目的的作用吗？我在曼哈顿里只看到表伴随和表结果的作用；如果protecting作items的定语，那只能理解为因为抽象名词item被“of ”的介词短语修饰，而这个介词短语是不可以移到别的位置的，所以可以跳跃修饰。这样解释是通的，但我的疑惑是，protecting也可以就近修饰equipment不是吗？不会有修饰对象模糊的问题吗？

这个明显protecting是做修饰补充作用啊，什么后定啊，就是状语啊，修饰前面的兽壳和木片，而不是修饰items。

SVO,doing，doing可能是O的后定或者SVO的伴随/结果状语，是后定还是状语由语义逻辑决定。
拓展：若O的后面有一大堆的修饰语，如定语从句，而doing仍然需要作后定，那么最好补出一个句末同位语，然后再加doing,即SVO,n.+doing。
个人觉得SVO,doing出现优先考虑是状语，因为如果是后定一是可能更就近修饰或者不加逗号，二是可以补出句末同位语，都比SVO,doing要好些，作状语的情况较为作后定的情况要多些。

额……我看了一下XDF的上课笔记，貌似SVO，doing结构中，doing还是不能修饰O的吧？
SVO,doing我小总结了一下大致三种：
1.做伴随状语，表同步发生，一定要说修饰对象的话，是修饰的S
  用初中生句子举例就是：I walk into my office，singing a song.
2.做结果状语，修饰SVO整句话
例子是OG12-47的bringing就是这个用法，用来说明前面five eagles left……的结果
3.做目的状语，就是本题的用法啦
其实第三点我自己也有疑问，只能说猜想是这样的。觉得虽然OG解释说是描述的ITEMS的目的，但是因为前面是一个S were O的句子，那么其实归根结底protecting修饰的也还是主语S

要说后置定语修饰O的话，应该是SVO doing（doing前没有逗号）才是吧？

我也是尝试着这样理解和总结的啦~有错误的话NN们看到一定告诉我啊~
