Undeniably, speaking and writing are both major communication channels through which we express our opinions and ideas to the outside world. However, people's opinions may vary when it comes to the statement that the ability to speak well is more pivotal to one's success than the ability to write well in modern society. As far as I am cornered, it is the other way round.

 

 In formal situations, such as job or university application, writing is the chief means of communication. Business contracts and the documents pertaining to a lawsuit presented in court are both in the form of writing. Furthermore, it is the case in most circumstances that if you do not write well you will not even be granted the chance to demonstrate your eloquence. For example, when an overseas student applies to a graduate school in the United States, it is his personal statement and required essays that reach the admission officer in the first place and, at least in part, determine whether he/she will get a telephone interview. At one end of the spectrum, a well-written personal statement may secure an applicant’s chance to be admitted and even win him/her a great deal of scholarship. at the other end, a student may be rejected by a university on the ground that his personal statement are badly-organized, incoherent, and full of grammar errors, even through the student's GPA as well as the score of the standardized test are both outstanding. In the business arena, the ability of writing well can either protect a company from potential losses or cost a company a good fortune. For example, a business contract, which contains a myriad of loopholes, will definitely undermine the enterprise’s interests in times of dispute.

 

 In addition, writing well can reach a wide range of people and have more profound impacts on the reader. Unlike the passive way of absorb information which is adopted by the bulk of the listeners, readers of an article or book can take a more active approach while reading. Hence, the ideas can be more effectively disseminated through writing. Stephen hawking, the world-renowned scientist, who can only speak with the help of computers due to his sever disease; have made his name through his well-received book A Brief History of Time. The popularity of the celebrities’ autobiographies and blogs also exhibits that the public put a higher premium on the celebrities’ writings rather than what they said during interviews.

 

Admittedly, an articulate and eloquent speaker is very eye-catching in a debate. Besides, in modern society, almost every business executive and politician has to have a solid speaking skill in order to deal with the aggressive mass media and maintain a positive image.

 

In sum, while speaking well is a valuable asset for a business executive and politician who is often exposed to the interrogation from mass media; on the balance, the ability to write well is indispensable in many other situations and thus is of paramount importance.
