看了很多CD和国外的帖子，感觉对这道题的解释都模模糊糊，发表一下我个人的见解，等NN诊断：
1. 这道题的结构不是not...but...，而是简单的连词并列结构： subject verb1, but verb2, and verb3=the earliest writing(subject) was(verb1), but began(verb2), and merged(verb3).
另一个迷惑点是很多人觉得but前用了comma，所以but后是一个主谓都要有的完整clause，但是根据manhattan 6th P102，对于一个含有多于3个items的list，如apples, pears, AND bananas时，第二个及以后item前要加comma，and前也要加comma，那么这里其实也相当于是一个含3个items的并列，只不过第二个item里有一个连词but。
现在的不确定是：一个完整句子里是不是可以连用2个以上的连词（but+and）？

很明显这里的VERB not （probably）A but （more than likely）VERB as想表达一个--（可能）不是，（很可能）是--的完整概念，所有把but当成连词后起一句句子把began和merge并排非常不合适。排除CD
C想表达一个was begnning的用法，如果不是was beginning则没有与之对应的分词--》错。
A中的was more likely to，先不说more后面要不要加than，was more likely to begin在句子上表达一个倾向，不符合意思表达。
B中的more than likely本来就表达十有八九是，呈现出的意思是--书写系统可能不是口语的表现而更可能是单独的交流系统，and之后才和口语相结合。

我觉得除了看语法外也要考虑meaning,看题目是不是有很强的比较A与B的意愿。

OG上说 When more is used in the comparative form of an adjective (more difficult) or adverb (more likely), it is followed by than.
但是查了一下大全，也有很多有more+adj/adv，但是不含than的用法。难道这些都不是comparative form? 如：
