Success comes from many elements, including careful planning, diligence and devotion. Sometimes, taking risks or chances is also critical to some successful cases; however, nothing can be left to chance, especially not success. In my opinion, careful planning is the pre-requisite to succeed and play a dominant role in success.

Fist of all, careful planning is the foremost element that leads to success, that is to say, people need to make short and long run goals and rely on honest and hard work to reach them. This is the basic truth in successes of different fields, from science to business administration. For example, numerous anecdotes are told about those diligent scientists who put their heart and soul in working and doing experiments, such as the boiled watch of Newton. It is true that scientific discovery often depends on chances; however, it is hard to imagine these opportunities will know the scientists’ doors without their devotion and patience. When it comes to the field of business, the executives clearly realize the importance of careful planning related to financial investment and the personnel management.

People are disposed to give some cases of success in which it seems that taking chances is the prominent element, like lottery winners or a company that succeeds overnight. However, if they think more about tens of thousands of  failures behind the few conspicuous examples, they will know chances seldom come.

Furthermore, sometimes, chances come from careful planning and hard work. As a philosopher remarked, chance is the dividend of sweat. The more you sweat the more chances you have. Therefore, chances often belong to those who have prepared well for them. When chances come, they can take advantage of them and achieve their goals, whereas those who work little and just wait to see chances pass by will be doomed to fail.

In conclusion, as the saying goes, Rome was not built in a day. Careful planning is the pre-requisite and critical element to success. More often than not, taking chances is not the opposite of the careful planning since people with planning can catch them better. But if you want to succeed and fulfill your dreams, never wait to see the chances slide away, and you must plan carefully and get prepared.
