The four pathways are:
· Privacy, trust, security, and ethics
· Data science and analytics
· Information architecture and design
· Knowledge management and information consulting
Within these pathways there are a range of suggested courses. You will have the option to tailor your degree, to build on your existing skills and expertise and to add new perspectives that will enhance your ability to address a range of information management challenges in a rapidly changing field.
So if you want to do data science, you can select from a range of suggested courses in that pathway

How much choice do I get in the classes I take?
A lot. There are three required courses (plus if you lack sufficient programming experience. you have to take a programming course). You choose one of our four pathways and then within a pathway, in coordination with your advisor you choose a combination of elective courses. That choice will be influenced by your interests and you expertise. Not all the electives in a pathway are taught every semester, but there are quite a few electives in each pathway. Most electives are about concepts central to the pathway, but others are about skills or techniques that can be used in the pathway. For example in the privacy, trust, security, and ethics pathway we have courses such as information ethics and Privacy in the Internet Age, but you might also take a course in say Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or data visualization if you were interested in exploring how GIS can be used to highlight problems of equity or how other visualizations can be used to help people understand privacy issues. Or data analytics to understand the privacy and ethical implications of data use - and how to develop policies to better manage the ethical use of data in an organization.
What will I learn that will help me land that first job, seize opportunities and become a leader in my field?
You will learn important technical skills. Which ones depend on the pathway you choose, but they could include data cleaning, data analytics, how to present the results of data analysis to different stakeholders, how to develop good policies for data management and preserving the privacy of customer information, how to organize datasets so that they can continue to be an asset for your organization, etc. But there are some other skills that you will learn that will add value to those technical skills. There are many. just a few are: how to work in an interdisciplinary team, how to explain the skills that you have and bring to a problem that are different from those of your team members, how to stay on top of rapidly changing technologies and IM practices, how to cope with messy data, how to do great work when there are tight deadlines, how information management and technological processes have an impact on your organization, and what to do to make things better and more productive
