Study alone or with a group?
Studying alone sounds like a efficient method for many students, for it allows them to concentrate on one subject. On the other hand, the importance of studying in a group is often undermined. In my opinion, group working is as important as, if not more than studying individually.
Most importantly, man is a social being. Social activities are much more relaxing and motivating than individual activities. Taking part in a group and getting touch with other people allow us not only to refresh in a sociable environment but also to get support from our friends who share a common goal. That is the reason why drama actors/actresses often ask for hugs from they friends on backstage before they jump on the stage and exposed themselves under the flashing light. Groups provide energy and make us feel less lonely.
In addition, certain abilities such as cooperation and communication are only cultivated by group working. In groups, we learn to listen and express ourselves. Only by listening to other’s opinions, we can learn to be patient and to be liberal to an opponent. By expressing our ideas, we refine them again and again in the progress of speaking and trying to persuade others. Dostoyevsky reads his novel to his wife every time he just finishes the draft, and contemplates about her opinion sincerely before his second draft comes out. This is a representative and active small group.
Furthermore, group working definitely is efficient. If not, there won’t be any storm on brainstorming session. While ideas are being exchanged among group members, different ideas are evaluated and criticized in each mind, which not only enlarges the probability for each member to see the hidden limitation of his/her own, but also encourage everybody to share their advantages and help others intellectually. A meeting is usually summoned when managers wants to see the whole picture more clearly, have more creative ideas and make a wise decision.
To conclude, studying in a group is necessary and beneficial for all concerned.
