NYU Stern School of Business Announces New Master of Science in Accounting

New York University Stern School of Business has announced a new one-year, full-time Master of Science in Accounting that will begin accepting qualified college graduates to start in the fall semester 2016. This program will satisfy the 150-credit-hour education requirement needed as a prerequisite for New York State’s Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification. The MS in Accounting provides a thorough foundation for careers in accounting, including attestation and assurance services, as well as taxation and forensic accounting. NYU Stern’s accounting department is consistently ranked among the top 10 accounting programs according to US News and World Report.

“Accounting is in Stern’s DNA,” said Thomas Pugel, Vice Dean of MBA Programs. “Charles Haskins, our first Dean, was also the founder of Haskins & Sells (now Deloitte) and founding president of the New York State Society of CPAs. With our heritage and reputation, it is no surprise that we offer a rigorous and varied program that will provide students a strong foundation for their careers over a lifetime.”

NYU Stern’s new MS in Accounting will allow college graduates with a business or accounting major to satisfy the course requirements for New York State’s CPA certification. Because of New York State’s stringent standards and reciprocity with other states’ certification, graduates of this program will be well-prepared to meet CPA requirements in other states such as California, Texas, and Florida.

“With the growing emphasis on financial regulation, there has been an increasing demand for accountants in all areas of practice,” said Professor Alex Dontoh, Deputy Chair of NYU Stern’s Accounting Department and faculty advisor for the program. “With the concentration of accounting firms – including headquarters of the Big Four – located here in New York, the employment opportunities for accountants are extremely strong.”

The 30-credit hour Masters’ program comprises 18 credits of core courses and 12 credit hours of track courses. Applicants with a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited degree-granting institution will be able to choose between two tracks, one in financial accounting and assurance and the other in taxation. In addition to a BS degree from an accredited institution, applicants would need to provide proof of completion of pre-enrollment course requirements and demonstrate proficiency in the English language.

Students in the program will have access to NYU’s Wasserman Center for Career Development, which has long-standing relationships with the Big Four accounting firms as well as other local and regional employers. The program will begin with an orientation and career boot camp, and the Wasserman Center will provide one-on-one career coaching as well as workshops on resume-writing, interviewing, and job search to prepare students.

"Applicants lacking one or more pre-enrollment course requirements may complete them at any degree-granting, accredited 4-year college or university prior to enrolling in the program."

It means that you can complete the courses in a college or university that qualifies to grant degrees by offering the accredited 4-year education. You don't need to have the classes in your own schedule for "degree". You only need to guarantee the pre-requisites are taken for credits with official transcripts in an accredited college or university.

Above are merely my interpretation. Please allow potential misunderstandings.

Location comes first and Stern is best! Welcome to Washington Square!
Business network comes first and Stern is also best in NYC together with Columbia.
I can't find any downsides of the program. ( On condition that your English is good enough.)

I looked over the curriculum on tax track. The tax courses are very intensive and comprehensive. Applicants with Chinese bachelor educational background had better study some basic U.S. tax practice in advance.
