Reading: 1) The formation of the solar system 2) Periodic table (元素周期表) 3) The development of the children: 1)smile to both parents and strangers; 2) two fears: separate anxiety and the fear of strangers; 3) the developing and declining of these two fears: the ability to remember & the acquisition of language enable them to be less dependant on their parents 4) True home of the migratory birds 5) Dada, a kind of artist movement which is anti-traditional, and prefers chance to the refined artistic technique, methods and so on.
Listening: 1) The student talked to the professor about her final grade. The professor was very surprised since they had just taken the mid-term. The student explained that she missed many classes, lectures and discussion since she was ill. The discussion will count for 20% of the final grade, so she wanted to make it up. However her teaching assistant told her that it was impossible to have a make-up presentation for the discussion and asked her to talk to her professor. After the professor found out that the student did a very good job on her written assignments, he promised to give her an alternative to make it up, in which the professor would ask questions and she is supposed to answer them. The secretary will arrange it. 2) Two characteristics of Bureaucracy: 1) the formation of the bureaucratic organization is to make its operation smoothly; 2) there are strict rule and regulation in a bureaucratic organization which in theory should be applied to every body. However there is exception. The professor gave an example, a student did very poor on her study because she had to take her ill mother. At last the committee members were moved by her tears and agreed to erase her scores from her transcript. Anyway, it is not recommended, since it would be unfair to other students. 3) Astronomy: talks about the formation of the galaxy, the Milky Way. The process is not fixed, since there are more and more new stars emerging. The lecture talks about the metal in the new stars and those in the old ones (sorry, I am confused). 4) The student wanted to find a job in a student center; because she was recommended by her friend who worked as a cashier in the pit (I can remember whether it is the correct words). However there is no vacancy. Those students who work there longer would have the privilege to get the job first. Then the man gave her two choices: 1) working behind the bar 2) responsible for the floor. However these two jobs didn’t fit into her schedule. The man asked her to find other jobs in other student center. The woman felt sorry for it since she is fond of getting a job in the pit. 5) Geology. Two theories 1) continent shift: the whole crust actually used to be an integral part owing to the discovery of some evidences: the same kind of fossils could be found both in Antarctic and the tropical areas; the mountains and other geographic feature are quite similar in different continents. However the scientist who put forward this theory could not give thorough explanation. 2) Plate tectonic which is used to explain many geographic puzzles, and is now widely acknowledged. 6) American writer in 19th century whose works presenting the negative impact of the industrialization upon the lives of ordinary people. Several characteristics of his short stories: 1) the circular plot which is different from those linear plot, with an open ending. 2) The introduction of the narrator, because of the poor expression of the characters in the story. The narrator would speak directly to the reader, so the reader could be an active participant rather than a passive observer 3) the speech in the stories are very simple, just like those in the daily life. His influence upon Earnest Hemingway.
Speaking 1) describe the job you want to pursue 2) which do you prefer, short vacation or long vacation 3) The writing requirement would be increased especially for those who major in science. The man is for the idea. 1) Because of poor academic writing, it would take the professor a whole week to read these lab reports, therefore the students could not get their next project started, since they have to wait for the report on the previous experiment. 2) The man wants to go to graduate school. The graduate school pays much attention to the writing capacity. 4) The secondary ecological process refers to the process to recover the damaged system. When a big tree falls down, the canopy would be gone. Then plenty of sunlight would shine down on the floor which would stimulate the raspberries to grow. At the same time, some tiny wood seeds would also have their roots growing underneath the earth. The raspberries would provide protection to the tiny seeds, to prevent them from being bitten by other animals. However when the tree begins to grow up, so will the canopy expands. As a result, it would prevent the sunlight from penetrating to the floor. Without enough sunshine, the raspberries would die out. 5) The woman would not attend the meeting hold tomorrow. The man feels sorry for that because he appreciates her input in the meeting. Besides the meeting is about a project will be due very soon. Then the man gives her two solutions: 1) contact the group members and reschedule the meeting. It might be difficult. 2) Send an email to every group member and present her idea about the project in her email. 6) The flat map would give misleading information for two reasons: 1) the flat map is 2-dimentional; however, the actual world is 3-dimentional. The relative distance between two points in 2 dimensions is different from that in the 3 dimensions; 2) the map would neglect the actual geographic features such as canyon or mountains. Therefore, though it might appear to be a short distance in the map would probably take the traveler much more time to complete because of mountains.
Writing: 1) the reading passage presents the advantages of advertising the drugs: 1)make the public informed; 2) the public could actively participate in the treatment; 3) the patient might recommend the new drug to the doctors since the doctors might too busy to update themselves. 2) The listening gives the disadvantages of advertising the drugs to the public: 1) the appeared healthy person in the advertisement might not be genuine and representative, besides, the side effects of the drug would always appear in a less significant place. 2) It might cause the public to worry about the non-existent illness which has not been diagnosed by the doctors. Therefore it would give a hard time to both the public and the doctors. 3) The new medicine might not be the best or the most appropriate one for the patient. Sometimes an old one would work better. 3) Which is more important: spending your time working at your job or spending time with your family. |
