4 Scandals are useful because they focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.

1. Scandal: public incidents that bring about disgrace or offends the moral sensibilities of the society.

A scandal is a widely publicized allegation or set of allegations that damages (or tries to damage) the reputation of an institution, individual or creed.[dubious – discuss] A scandal may be based on true or false allegations or a mixture of both.

1. huge amount of incorrect information to tell from the right to wrong
a waste of public’s time

2. reveal cheating, stupidity of business and politicians and even genius :jobs→ some contemplation

lehman brothers and KfW German bank
Invade Wall St. 99% paid less; 1% paid too much

Michael Jackson ___12 year old boy scandal

Critical thinking for the public

3. too much attention ___detrimental___ world view ___everything is so fake/ has a negative side--→distract ppl from a beautiful life

4. scandals will increase the popularity of a celebrity
ridiculous one ___> lady gaga is a guy!!!!!

4 Scandals are useful because they focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.

Scandals, with a really unpleasant implication, are usually avoided by the society. They are formed by a mix of true or fake news about one incident to humiliate the ideal figure of a person or institution. Even though they have lots of side effects in general, they do reveal some hidden facets that the public will otherwise never know. People will contemplate their maniac or loyalty towards the situation, and shape a critical thinking mind. Therefore, I agree with the statement, supporting by the following explanations.

The public sees the stupidity of an institution through scandals. KfW, a German government-owned development bank, blundered to transfer thousands of dollars to Lehman Brothers, which was known in bankruptcy. This caused 0.4 billion dollars loss to KfW, and it was even been denominated as the most foolish bank in Germany. Poor communication in KfW caused the situation, where management and operation thought that someone would put a halt on this transaction, but no one actually did it. The public will definitely invest less money or be cautious about financial service in KfW. Their hallucination of German spirits, serious and prudent, will be partly gone as well. Other financial institutions will take this incident as a warning that to be more heedful of communication channels in their companies.

Moreover, scandals can destroy the ideal images we set for celebrities. In Chinese view, we somehow will idolize celebrities and project them perfect images. The case relates to Steven Jobs is self-evident. Computers originally intimidated people, by its geeky and work-related image. However, Jobs presented computers, Ipads and Ipods in a more playful and user-friendly way that everyone found them entertaining. Though he was godfather in computer industry, character wise, he was an awful person. When he was young, he was so conceited that he did not believe that he had a daughter, and ditched his current wife and daughter for six years. He was also so self-centered in Apple operation that he listened to no one and was later fired. Also, he brought the cooperate culture in Apple that if you could not solve the problem, you would be replaced. The public cannot help recognize his genius in computers. Nevertheless, as we see so many drawbacks in his character, we know that such a genius is simply a normal person. It is unintelligent to worship him and consider him a deity. He is simply good at what he love to do, and everyone else will be good at his passions as well.

Nonetheless, scandals will sometimes overshadow the facts and even be detrimental to the society. Some Chinese government officials are often connected with corruption scandals and sent to prison later. Overly broadcast does results in few dishonesty happening. Unfortunately, too many reports somehow convince the public that most of the government officials are dishonest, and the government will barely do any good to its citizens. This fact definitely contradicts with my upbringing. Living in a family where my mother is a government official, I know about her integrity all my life. Her colleagues are all people with honesty and devoted to build China a better place. Even scandals are overwhelming and brainwashing, I cannot see a corrupted government be able to construct the booming China. People like my mother must be the majority in government. Conversely, people who do not grow up in such a family and have poor living standards will no doubt blame their sufferings on the depraved government. The extreme case will be that they start to hate the society and revenge by killing innocent people. Therefore, such scandals do lead quite a focus to the negative sides of a society, but too much exposal will be overwhelming and harmful to a peaceful life.

To sum it up, scandals is a powerful tool to direct the public to reflect on cases they will barely encounter and even stimulate a progress in the society. Contrarily, it is also a double-sided blade that once overused, will be destructive to the society as well.
