Do you agree or disagree: college anduniversities must do a better job of preparing student for the workplace. What is the obligation of a university? Shoulduniversity spare no effort to prepare students for a better job? The 21stcentury is characterized by stress and pressure, students, especially those whoreceive tertiary education, feel more stressful to find themselves high-payingoccupation. Despite the fact that numerous universities are preparing studentsfor their future career, I contrarily insist that there is no need foruniversity to do so and reasons are listed in the following. First and foremost, university is heavenfor people with ambition and dreams to find themselves and chase for theirgoals. University severs as an open space where there provides all possibilities:students majoring in mathematics can develop his skills of badminton and becomean athlete of the Olympic Games in 2016; students can spend the whole yeardevoting themselves to volunteering work and finding their self-value; studentscan also fall in love with someone and find love is the theme of his/ her life. All in all, university is the place where students can find their owncharacteristics, merits and shortcomings, sharp themselves and figure out whatreally interest them so that they can make their own dreams come true andobtain their self-value. Goes as the saying by John Dewey, a famous educatorand philosopher, that schools is not preparation for life, but school is life, which means that the process of schooling, the experience of finding ourselvesaccounts. Secondly, universities need to put agreater premium on the ability to learn and create, instead of preparingstudents for their future job. Experience of Albert Einstein, one of the mostfamous physicists in history is the case. Einstein’s reading area ranged frommathematics and astronomy to philosophy and archeology during his graduatestudy, which laid valid foundation for his later accomplishment and success. What’smore, the critical thinking and creative ideas also play a pivotal role in notonly one’s future career but also in their daily life: it is generallyacknowledged that employees never merely like those who just follow their boss’sinstruction without proposing any practical suggestion, which means thatcreative thinking sometimes is more vital than executive power. Admittedly, students who have beenfacilitated with diverse job techniques when they graduate can be more competitivethan those who just have a good command of creative thinking and bear their owndreams in a short run. However, in a long-term run, the latter seem to be along-distance runner who can win in the long run—the job competition becausesome practical job techniques and skills can be learned with several years’ oreven few months’ accumulation and experience. While all people have a goodcommand of the same skills, it is quite obvious that only those with creativethinking cultivated in their university can stand out and achieve higheraccomplishments. What’s more, the 21st century is characterized bychanges and some techniques can be outdated in an extremely short period andjust like the old saying goes that teaching him to fish is better than givinghim a fish. And university should bear their responsibility to developmentstudents in all areas so as to improve students’ overall ability and make themadjust to all circumstances. In conclusion, university is the placewhere students can make their dreams come true, show out individuality and findtheir self-value. Thus it is without doubt that universities should concentratetheir main effort to cultivate students’ overall ability and provide goodenvironments and policies for students to chase for their goals instead of justfocusing on preparing students for their future work.
