1. if you're attending Georgetown or George Washington, and opt to live very close to the schools, then you're in a bind and living cost is quite high. I'd suggest you be willing to share apt or a house with other students. Any area close to the White House (i.e, Northwest DC) is VERY expensive. Average rent is $1200-2000 per month for a two-bedroom, I think. So if you share, the cost goes down. One alternative is to live a bit further, say across the Potomac river in Virginia or in surbuban Maryland, and rent is a lot more affortable. You won't miss much when it comes to your social life. DC raves for one of the most convenient subway systems in the country. As long as you live close to the subway (metro), you can practically go anywhere. As for TOTAL living cost including entertainment, it's hard to say, depeding on how much you intend to go out. The area is expensive, and to maintain an active social life is very costly. However, if you have a student stipend, you won't be able to save much anyway. 2. Job market is good in the DC area (including DC, MD, VA). What is unique about this area is that many of the hirings are in govt sector and govt contractors, and those jobs need citizenship and security clearnce. There are still many others jobs for sure, and definitely no less than any other big metro areas. Just want to point out that this is not a commercial region like NYC. 3. There are MANY big companies, just depending on your areas of interest. I also know several people have landed jobs in places such as the World Bank, cushy jobs with good pays. 4. Weather is OK here. You will see 4 seasons. We do see snow, but not much. In summer time it gets VERY humid. So depending on where you're from in China, you will love or hate the weather. |
