通常翻译成：发生在****年（月、天等）前

故事发生在200年前。

2. date back to 后面加某一个过去时间的具体时点

通常翻译成：发生在过去****的时候

如：
The church dates back to 1173. 此教堂建于1173年。
The town dates back to the Tang Dynasty. 这座小镇建于唐代。

this custom dates back to the 17th century ,
这种风俗开始于17世纪

but this church dates back 8 centuries.
