Dear LZ, I grew up in the u.s too, just like yourself but I came here when I was 9 yrs old and currently 32. If you search for my post I have similar background in supply chain but with more experience.
I think your advantage is you don't have to worry about H1B and visa issues. That is about it, this is the sad truth. We immigrant do have English advantage competing with foreigners, but we are no better competing with true Americans. Remeber most ppl are fighting for the same jobs you want after grad school, how can you separate yourself from the crowd,
Remeber, you are your own brand, you are your own product, how you market yourself and what you want other to see you as can go a long way in building confidence, that's where MBA can help.
First of all, you have to have self awareness, which you already identify, instead of focusing of what you're good at, try to identify your weakness because ADcom will ask you the samething given ur background with no upward trend in your five yrs with the company. Ask yourself how can the mba really help you, you already said strategy consulting, you're 28, by the time you graduate you will be 30. Consulting industry, you already will be at disadvantage, can you convince Bain &co, McKinsey or even Accenture to hire you when they can hire top notch young professionals with established tracked records. You have to come back to earth and set your bar not too high. Another thing is how you write your essay. You're applying Wharton, stern. These are all finance heavy brands. But can you seriously handle the course work. Can you handle the rigorous case interview? I'm not trying be negative. You can focus on your current background and convince top 20 school to take you because you think mba will help sharpen your business acuments or you simply can't answer some of the startegic questions at meetings presented by sr. Mgt. Lacking of this skills is one reason you want to go back at this time. I think you will have a better chance convincing them to give you a chance to offer you a seat for them to polish your leadership skills rather than go blind and a fizzy future career goal.once you're in the mba program, what you like'd to concentrate this is your choice, no ADcom can interfere. I hope this would give u a starting point, if you need any advice, you can msg me. My background is in strategic sourcing, global supply chain manager. See hmm background in other post. |
