just chip in my 2 cents:
1) the diploma would say NYU, Polytechnic School of Engineering. It's an official NYU degree for sure, but it's from Polytechnic School of Engineering, not Courant (in the case of MathFin). And people (especially from the industry) know the difference between Poly's MFE and Courant's MathFin. They are not in the same tier, MathFin has far far better reputation and placement.
2) if you want a free ride on the NYU fame, I'd say be wary of it. For all we know, Poly's MFE could become a great tier 1 program in a couple of years had it boost better faculty, downsize the program to under 100 people and spend more resources on career development. But that's contingent, so don't bet all your hope on something that may or may not happen.
3) the upper-side of going to poly is its location and diversity of available courses. It's one of those programs that you could either come out knowing everything, or nothing. So it's really up to how hard you work and network. The program itself is not going to land you a job.
If you have other options, make a pros and cons list, do some analysis on ROIs among those programs and make a more informed decision. |
