我的理解是这样的:
1)the former(few of those pollutants) means that, if you made lists of the pollutants from each of the two sources, then one of the lists would be missing pollutants that were on the other list.
两个子集,分别为A和B
A包含了:1,2,3,4,5,6
B包含了:1,2,3
The number in B is fewer of those number in A
同理:pollutants分为两个子集,
Pollutants 1: N, O, A, B, R
Pollutants 2: N, A, O
这里应该属于包含于被包含的关系
2)the latter(less of those pollutants) means that both lists would contain the same pollutants, but that the quantities would be lower on one side.
两个子集,分别为A和B
A包含了:1,1,1,2,2,2,2,3,3
B包含了:1,1,1,2,2,3
由于子集里包含的数字都是一样的,但是所不同的是他们同一元素的数目不同
这个时候就使用:The number in B is less of those numbers in A.
同理转换成pollutants的话,
Pollutants 1: N, N,N,E,E,E,E
Pollutants 2:N, N, E,E
Pollutants 2所含的浓度要比Pollutants 1的浓度要低,则:pollutants 2 less of those pollutants 1.
说到这的时候,忽然觉得应该less of是对元素一样的样本,比较的是样本之间的质量。
