请教OG17第724题。请教D选项有哪些错误？

At the end of 2001, motion picture industry representatives said that there were about a million copies of Hollywood movies available online and expected piracy to increase with high-speed Internet connections that become more widely available.

"would" is not required to represent a general principle

as 引导从句的时候是 ADV modifier 用来修饰动词的这里 D 选项 as -clause 修饰的是名词 the increase of piracy

其次这里有个increase 的习惯用法，increase in 表示数量 increase of + 百分数

请问：would在这儿为何不能表示industry representatives当时对未来的一种看法，所以D用conditional时态；而不是代表general principle。

if you take "as" as a conjunction, the structure will be: ....expected....as ....became.....
BTW, "an increase" is better than "the increase"

lz的问题很好！说说我的理解：

become是个main verb，而would是个auxilury verb。使用would类似给verb加个modifier，给出更多信息。
e.g., They expected X as Y became more widely available. [Y发生的时候X发生, very simple]e.g., They expected X as Y would become more widely avaiable. [用了would，1. 可能是will的过去式，2. 可能表达一种hope／wish]
如果要细究，1. X和Y不同时发生，意思不对，应该是两者同时发生，不分先后；2. 如果真是表达hope，那说明they不太确定Y会不会发生，也就没必要做为conditional phrase了。

其次，由于还能找出D的另一个错误，expected "the increase of ..." 这么说的意思是the increase of ...一定会发生。和expect意思冲突。
I expect the unexpected things. unexpected things一定会发生。
I expect a salary increase. salary increase不一定100%发生。

E is so simple and has no ambiguity, so I choose E.

还有能否告知一下the increase of 和to increase的区别？

as 在这里有表同时发生的意思 expected...as...became 可以用while 来代替，所以我个人感觉是时态在同一个时间轴里更加合理
