3.4 It is better to work at home/at office.
Aiming at earning profits as well as fames, most bosses and managers try hard to come up with methods to improve their staffs’ working efficiency and spirit which, most researchers believe, devote to the success of any certain company. However, while some officers hold that working at home is better than at office, some maintain an opposite opinion. As far as I am concerned, I prefer working at office with the following considerations.
Firstly, as most of us would agree, home is filled with ease atmospheres as well as entertainment equipments which would drive our attention away from working stuff. In other words, working at home will lower the efficiency and spirit needed for work. For example, my father, an editor of our local magazine City Review, had once worked at home for one month during my summer vacation. I remembered that he always got up until 10 a.m. and it is rare to see him working in the studying room in our house. As a consequence, he wrote little articles during that time and his boss fired him without hesitation. From his story, I learn that it is too comfortable to work at home that few of us would really take the advantage of that convenience.
In addition, as workers tend to be more specific in their own areas, most of the tasks nowadays are conducted by people with different skills and knowledge. As a result, it requires people to work together and in groups rather than working alone. For example, before a software company aiming to produce a state-of-the-art software, the officer should first acquire the information of the supply-and-demand condition in the market to see whether his production would survive from the severe competition in the market. Also, once confirmed that his new software truly has demanders, he should set the price that would be accepted by most of the consumers. It is hard for any person to carry out all these processes without corporation from others. Instead, it is common to see a group of experts with different skill gathering in group to execute the process. In this situation, rather than working at home, people should better work in office to make group working possible.
However, although there are various advantages of working at office, we should also mention that, for some certain career, working at home is a better choice. It is known to all that most of the out-standing writers, such as Jane Austin and Allen Poe, composed their book at home, for they work for themselves rather than companies! What’s more, recently some musical composers set their homes as studio. Because, for these art performers, most of the inspiration rise at night, when working at home, it is much more convenient for them record these sparks at home, without the need to stay up late at office. |
