In the lecture, the speaker casts doubt onthe three mainly theories about the usage of the great houses of thesettlements of Chaco Canyon. In his opinion, none of the theories areconvincing for the reasons below.

First of all, the assumption that the Chacostructures were once residential, and each served as living places for hundredsof people is totally wrong. Although looking from outside, they seem likeliving houses, when observing it from within, it is not the same story at all.If they were once houses for hundreds of people, there should be many fireplaces since people must cook inside the houses. As a matter of fact, however, only few fire places that would support approximately 10 families to cook werefound there. And this discovery seriously casts doubt on the theory of thereading, which claims that the buildings were once used as living houses forhundreds of people.

Second, the alternative assumption that theChaco structures are used for food storage is also unsupported by the evidencefounded in the houses. If they were used to store food, then it is expectedthat the traces or remains of maize, which was one of their main crops, will befound inside the building. In fact however, there are neither traces of maizenor remains of containers of maize are found in the building. In this way, thelacking of evidence just turned down the theory that the buildings were onceused to store food.

Last but not least, the third theorymentioned in the reading, which proposes that the houses were served asceremonial centers is not well supported by the evidence, too. The speaker ofthe lecture suggests that evidence shows that the buildings might once beconstruction places. As supporting evidence, many remains such as building materialsas well as tools are found in the houses. As a result, the broken pots, whichmentioned in the reading as evidence, can also be one of the regular trashesthat were left by the constructing workers after they had meals. In this way,the speaker refutes the third theory by indicating that the pots are actuallynot good evidence.

As we can see, the speaker just disagreeswith the reading with the three theories about the usage of the Chacostructures.

Nowadays, the quality of people’s lives isgreatly improved. In the meantime, the development of technology sets morepeople free from some basic the repetitive jobs so that people seem to savemore time. Seeing this, some people may claim that modern people just spend toomuch of their time on personal enjoyment rather than what their should do. Inmy opinion, although it is true that nowadays people have more time, I don'tthink they spend too much time on enjoyment and entertaining than doing thingsthey should do.

First of all, as a matter of fact, I don'tthink modern people have too much left for themselves. It is true that afterthe invention of some tools, such as big machines as well computers, man areliberated from repetitive jobs and those time-consuming jobs. Tools will justhelp us. But unfortunately, people feel busier as there are a lot of pressuresin the fast-paced modern society. People have to worry about their jobs, whether they will lost their jobs or not; their futures-how to get a place forthemselves in such a competitive society. Their minds are full ofconsiderations like this and they have no time to think about personalentertainment. I have a cousin who works in a big company. Usually she canfinish her part of work by using computer. The only thing she needs to do is toset a program in the computer and then the program will run itself. It seemslike she has a lot of private time. As a matter of fact, she never has personalentertaining such as hanging out with friends or shopping. In her spare time, she just tries to make herself more competitive by learning various of coursesrelated to her job. As we can see, even if modern people have their privatetime, they just use the time to do job-related things but not for relaxation ortheir own hobbies.

Furthermore, even if modern people do havemore private time and do use their time for personal entertaining rather thandoing things they should do, it is not necessarily inappropriate because forsome people, their interests are their jobs and their can be occupied all thetime by their jobs and meanwhile enjoy themselves very much. I have a friendwho is a photographer; he spends on his time on shooting photos and progressingthem in the darkroom and then printing them out. As a photographer, it is hisjob to shoot photos and this is exactly what he should do. At the same time, itis his hobby, and he just gains great joy when he is taking photos. As for him, spending time on his personal enjoyment and doing things they should do is justthe same thing! So I think it is just abrupt to make the conclusion that peopletoday spend more time on personal entertaining rather than their jobs.

In a word, I think it is inappropriate toclaim that people nowadays just spend less time on things they should do butinstead devote more time on their personal enjoyment. As we can see from above, not all the people have enough time to enjoy themselves under tremendouspressures of modern society, and even if they have time, they might be able tocombine their hobbies with their works well, which makes them happy as well asefficient.

In conclusion, because of the reasonsmentioned above, within twenty years, there will be fewer cars in use thanthere are today.
