Good question! More or less you are right. R1 is better than R2 because there are more spaces and more chances. Even if the difference is relatively small. As for the “quality” per round. I don't think its possible to judge this in any way, because nobody reads all the essays of all the schools in all the rounds. Also some years have more candidates in R1 and some more in R2, and of course it changes from school to school (so there is an element of luck, or circumstance here). But in general, for both your chances and for the flexibility of your strategy (i.e. finding out whether or not you got into school X early) it is generally much better to apply R1, UNLESS your essays aren’t ready.. in which case R2 is much better.
