Some people think university professors should spend more time doing research while others think they should spend more time educating students. What is your view?
Some people claimed that university professors are supposed to spend more time educating students rather than doing research, arguing that only in this way could college students get better educated and learn the skills needed in the future. In my point of view, these people need to expand their outlook, because spending more time doing research not only benefit the students but also benefit the whole world. First, there is no need for a professor to spend much time teaching his or he students. Unlike high school students, who have to learn the basic knowledge needed for further study, college students are already familiar with those basic knowledge, meaning they just need some instructions to help them explore much deeper. And these instructions won’t take a lot of time of college professors. To illustrate my point briefly, I will give you an example. Learning process is like learning swimming. Swimming coaches spend most of their time teaching the swimmer how to float on the water. Once the swimmer could float on the water, all the coaches have to do is to show some movements to the swimmer, and then, the swimmer could learn these movements by themselves. College students are like the swimmer who can float on the water, professors only need spend little time to show the “movements” the students need to study. In addition, teaching less may be good for college students, for they can foster their creativity when they studying by themselves. What’ more important is that, the world need those brilliant university professors spending more time doing their research. It is not uncommon that many recent high technologies are invented in universities’s laboratories by college professors. For example, in china, a professor of Beijing university invented a new solar powered car last year, which cost less and run faster than other solar powered cars. There is no doubt that some great breakthrough even has the ability changing the world. Taking the internet for example, we can see how a particular invention play a pivotal role in the world’s further development. and this invention takes years for the scientist, as well as professors, doing research to accomplish. Can you now imagine a world without internet? Luck for you, that those professors spent that much time on it. Taking these two factors into consideration, we can safely conclude that university professor need spend more time doing research rather than educating students. |
