"Despite its downtown location, the Rialto Movie Theatre, a local institution for five decades, must make big changes or close its doors forever. It should follow the example of the new Apex Theatre in the mall outside of town. When the Apex opened last year, it featured a video arcade, plush carpeting and seats, and a state-of-the-art sound system. Furthermore, in a recent survey, over 85 percent of respondents reported that the high price of newly released movies prevents them from going to the movies more than five times per year. Thus, if the Rialto intends to hold on to its share of a decreasing pool of moviegoers, it must offer the same features as Apex."

In this argument the author concludes that Rialto must offer the same features as Apex if it intends to hold on to its share of a decreasing pool of moviegoers. At the first glance, this argument appears to be somewhat forceful. However, careful scrutiny of the manager’s argument reveals several unanswered questions which render it unconvincing. From the logical perspective, this argument suffers from three logical flaws.
To begin with, the threshold problem with this argument is that the arguer’s claim was based on the assumption that Apex was a successful movie theatre, making lots of profit in the market. However, there is no relative information, such as the financial report, to support this assumption. It is entirely possible that the Apex theatre was suffering a financial deficit as their luxury facilities need a big budget for maintenance. In such case, Rialto should not follow Apex’s scenario of facilities at all.
Even if the assumption that Apex was successful were acceptable, another problem that weakens the logic of the argument is that the author assumed the success of Apex was due to Apex featured a video arcade, plush carpeting and seats, and a state-of-the-art sound system in the theatre. The coincidence of the luxury facilities Apex provided and its financial success does not necessarily prove that the former causes the latter. Many other factors may contribute to Apex’s prosperous market, such as the advanced management, friendly staff and low ticket price. Without ruling out these possibilities, it is unfair to conclude that Rialto would succeed as long as it offers the same features as Apex.
Before I come to my conclusion, it is necessary to point out the last flaw involved in this argument. Lacking evidence that theconditions for two movie theatres are similar, the author’s claim that Apex’s success can be repeated by Rialto isunconvincing. Even if applying superior facilities of Apex is the key factor for its success, it may be not suitable for Rialto to apply. Perhaps the majority customers of Rialto come to this theatre was for its traditional features inside and to recall their old memories. In this case, updating the facility follow Apex’s standard will no doubt lead to a shrink on the market, which will worsen Rialto’s current condition.
To sum up, this arguer fails to illustrate his claim as the evidence cited in the analysis does not provide strong support to what the arguer maintains. More specific data valid evidence need to be provided to answer the above questions for making this recommendation persuasive.
