你覺得大學教授主要的角色是做研究(research)還是教書(educate students)?
There is a general discussion these days over the main role of the professor in universities. Coincident with the opinion of many other people is my agreement with the idea that the focus of professors should be put primarily on teaching than doing research. Because, I think, educating students is professors’ responsibility, and would be also beneficial for them.(benefits them)
It is true that nowadays there is a part of professors in colleges who cares more about the research rather than educating. A considerable deal of money and frame brought by this as well as the strong enthusiasm for career may be closely related to this phenomenon. However, I still hold the view that the advantages of education of students carry more weight than those of the research, due to the merits of teaching can also lead to the desirable results that research creates.
The first reason that I want to put forward is that the professor essentially has the responsibility to foster students. The original purpose of the universities' presence is for the people who want to receive more education. Equally, the significance of this professor vocation is also aimed for students. Just imagine what would be like if the universities in my country hire the professors in various kinds of discipline, such as biology, chemistry, phycology/psychology and geology, instead of leading their students to a wider world of knowledge, only for more success academically. In short, it is conceivable that students’ education is the fundamental duty for the professor.
Moreover, great students educated by the professor is instrumental for the professor themselves. Take one of my cousins, who is a professor of pharmacy, for an example. He gets inspired to figure out a novel method for the synthesis of a new drug intermediate, while he was replying to his student's questions. If my cousin does not pay any attention to his students, I think the amazing idea will fail to show up so efficiently . The innovative and creative thoughts of students may be one of the fantastic parts of the scientific work, which similarly make professor achieve his goal of research. In conclusion, professors get benefits to teach students.
All in all, I think although concentration on research programs may have some minor virtues to some degree, the most impacts exerted by fostering excellent students are more desirable and satisfactory. On the other hand, if the professor take measures to arrange their schedules properly and balance their projects and teaching work, he or she will have a more efficient and meaningful performance in the work as well as become a better pilot of life.
