Issue30. Teachers' salaries should be based on their students' academic performance.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim. In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reasons and/or examples that could be used to challenge your position.
Education is a particular industry different from other ones and the main purpose of a teacher’s job is educating students rather than gaining profits like other work. The speaker implies that teachers' salaries should based on their students' academic performance without other choices. I agree with him to some extent. However, if teachers’ salaries are only based on their students' academic performance, the outcome may have negative effects.
Admittedly, there is no doubt that the academic performance is one crucial aspect to measure how good and capable a teacher is. After all, one of the most essential tasks for a teacher is to teach students knowledge. A teacher can never be considered good if he fails to teach students the real knowledge. Given some professors in my college, their tasks are not only to teach students knowledge but also do several researches on their fields. Sometimes, they excessively focus on their researches resulting in the time of preparing their teaching projects limited. Thus, their teaching qualities are not good which makes students confounded on account of their bad performance of lectures leading to the failure of understanding the knowledge. This may make the students gain a bad academic performance. Even though those professors do excellent jobs in their researches, their salaries should not be based on their performance of researches which could bring them high salaries but based on their students’academic performance. For this kind of teachers, their salaries about teaching should be cut off since the poor academic performance of the students which is caused by the teachers’dereliction of duty.
However, if the teachers’ salaries only be decided by the students’ academic performance, it will produce negative effects. If the better the students performance such as the score of an exam is, the more the teachers’ salaries are. Thus, in order to get high salaries, a teacher may choose to teach the knowledge which is only related to exams and overlook others which may be profound and abstruse but more or less useful to students. Even some teachers may offer students answers before the exam on purpose of every student gaining high scores or neglect and disregard the phenomena of deceiving in the exam. In the light, teachers' salaries are only based on their students' academic performance, which brings terrible and unpredictable effects on students.
In addition, evaluating a teacher is only based on the students academic performance may make the teacher focus on the students’ academic performance and ignore other developments of students. After all, not all students are good at studying and do well in academic performance. It is common to see that some students are born of tennis but not adept at studying academic knowledge. Therefore, a good teacher should unearth the potentials and abilities of these students and be an inductor to encourage and indict them to cultivate their specialties.
To sum up, it is of importance that teachers' salaries are based on their students' academic performance. However, unduly focusing on the students' academic performance for gaining high salaries to the teachers is not appropriate. Besides, teachers should take the other developments of students into account.
