今天在看bbc的新闻，这个句子的红色部分，为啥要用gone？起的是什么作用？

为什么我理解的是gone——死去的战士？反正是分词后置修饰名词。

Also the second half of the sentence fits the following meaning:
Since the American arm has left Iraq, no one could stop the sectarian violence in Iraq.
