Teacher: Journalists who conceal the identity of the sources they quote stake their professional reputations on what may be called the logic of anecdotes. This is so because the statements reported by such journalists are dissociated from the precise circumstances in which they were made and thus will be accepted for publication only if the statements are high in plausibility or originality or interest to a given audience – precisely the properties of a good anecdote.



Student: But what you are saying, then, is that the journalist need not bother with sources in the first place. Surely, any reasonably resourceful journalist can invent plausible, original. or interesting stories faster than they can be obtained from unidentified sources.

没看懂学生的想法与老师说的怎么联系在一起的。可能是我原文意思理解错了。

隐藏资料出处的记者是在拿自己的职业声誉在logic of anecdotes上冒险。也就是因为这样的statement是和事实不一致的,也只有在这种情况下才能被同意出版:这个statement有很高的可靠度和原创性并且有些读者对这很感兴趣。

很明显,学生的说法是错的,老师并没有认为记者没必要为资料的来源烦神,这个学生没有看清老师所说的statement会被出版的前提。

哦!是不是可以这样理解?:

学生说的“Surely, any reasonably resourceful journalist can invent plausible, original. or interesting stories faster than they can be obtained from unidentified sources.”暗示说journalist完全可能编造这种unattributed statement。

而老师说“This is so because the statements reported by such journalists are dissociated from the precise circumstances in which they were made ”有两种可能:确实有这个statement;记者编造的。所以说“Journalists who conceal the identity of the sources they quote stake their professional reputations on what may be called the logic of anecdotes.”就是有被认为违反职业操守而编造statement的可能。

Spot the question type: Methods of the reasoning - Flaw.

Hard question.

Ok, let us see the core of the argument first.

T: Logic of anecdotes - Stake the professional reputation by concealing the identity of the sources.

Publication would be accepted only if the statement are high in plausibilities or originalities or interest to a given audiences.

S: Journalist must not bother with sources in the first place, if they can invent plausible, original or interesting stories faster than they can be found from unidentified sources.

So, what is the flaw of Student's statement ?

* Treating the necessary condition as the sufficient condition ! Which is to say that student believes that as long as the statements are high in plausibility or originality or interest to a given audience, it must not care about the identity of the source to have the work being publicized. "

However, if that is the case, then the student must falsely assume the fact that the journalist must have such motives " before the publication " without offering any justifications. Apparently, If the the publication of such " statement " had already on the market for the audiences, then teacher must just explain a "condition" as a basis to have publications accepted.  By the same token, student treats that condition as a sufficient condition to come up with his conclusion that journalist must have such motive. Even it could be true, it could still not to be true.

可以, 但是十七題你沒有了解到問題的核心。

學生的結論為, 記者在原本的時候必定沒有要找尋出處動機。可是重點是, 要是老師講得這樣子的情況已經發生了, 那就必定代表至少有一個記者有動機會試著去找尋出處。 所以, 學生在做結論時忽略掉了一個機率, 就是老師說的這樣的情況下發生的出版物已經在市場上的機率。
