Sunspots, vortices of gas associated with strong electromagnetic activity, are visible as dark spots on
the surface of the Sun but have never been sighted on
the Sun’s poles or equator.

(A) are visible as dark spots on the surface of the Sun but have never been sighted on
(B) are visible as dark spots that never have been sighted on the surface of the Sun
(C) appear on the surface of the Sun as dark spots although never sighted at
(D) appear as dark spots on the surface of the Sun, although never having been sighted at
(E) appear as dark spots on the Sun’s surface, which have never been sighted on
这道题目正确答案是A,我选的是C

OG对C的解释是:Although typically introduces a subordinate clause, which has a subject and a verb, but here there is no subject and sighted is not a complete verb.
为什么不能把C看作是省略主语吖?
难道although必须要有主语?可是OG48有一题也考了though, 其实一个正确选项是 Though called a sea, the landlocked Caspian is actually the largest lake on Earth, covering more than four times the surface area of its closest rival in size, North America's Lake Superior.   这里though不就是省略了Caspian sea吗? 为何又是对的了????

个人拙见。。
lz拿这两个句子的类比不甚恰当, “Though called a sea”和“although never sighted at”这两个clause的根本属性不一样,前者是一个分词从句,后者是一个完整的主句,因为如果按C中的表述句子应该是appear和was sighted并列才对,那就应该是“although was never sighted at”,was不能省,去掉了was这个就变成了分词从句,但分词从句怎么能这么跟主句并列?所以although引导的这个句子就错了,并不是说although后不能省略主语。。
至于要是lz问C项加上was之后对不对,我就不敢说了。。

请问visible 和appear有区别么?可以用这两个词来判断么?

我的理解

Although用法:1.although + 主谓宾(句子)   2.although + 短语:短语要是能跟前面平行的东西,否侧不能加短语。

以下这段话是来自曼哈顿instructor的解释,可以看一看帮助理解
Eg: A recent poll indicates that many people in the United States hold a combination of conservative and liberal political views; i.e., they denounce big government, saying government is doing too much and has become too powerful, while at the same time supporting many specific government programs for health care, education, and the environment.

Here also, after the while  we don't have an active verb, but still the construction is correct.

That's a bit different example. In the question you posted, there is clear parallelism between "saying government is doing too much and has become too powerful, while at the same time supporting many specific government programs..."

In this sentence, there's nothing to make parallel to sighted. "Sunspots appear on the surface although never sighted" You could get away with changing the second part to a prepositional phrase, such as: "sunspots appear on the surface although not at the poles". Instead, A gives us two clear verbs to make parallel.

表示时间/条件/转折/让步的连词(when/while/if/unless/although/even though/even if) + 形容词短语/-ing短语/-ed短语
也就是说这些词省略的时候相当于省略了be动词,只有在主系表结构才可以省略~
