答案说选择B。我就不明白。not x but y中的x和y不应该是平行的么。。是一个形式的么？如果是B，不是一个名词一个动词么？

1.be likely to do sth
likely作形容词.译为有可能做某事.
eg:It is likely to rain.
好像快要下雨了.

2.likely do sth .
likely做副词.译为大概..
主要用在most,或者very.后面.
eg:They'll very likely come by car.
他们很有可能会开车来.

began在这里是动词么。。

这个结构到底是怎样的呢。。。

这里不是not X but Y句型，but在这里作连词，the earliest writing was probably not a direct rendering of speech 和but more than likely began as a separate and distinct symbolic system of communication 是两句话，但主语都是the earliest writing

这道题好像出得有点妖，故意引诱我们去想not x but y.

这题让我感觉怪异的地方是标点符号，but前面有逗号，似乎暗示but后面要跟整句吧。 (看来这个不一定，是吧？）
但是好像was, but began, and merged这个结构是对的...
