OG紫皮语法19题和22题,大家讨论一下吧(附OG上的解释)

19. While depressed property values can hurt some large investorsthey are potentially devastating for homeowners, whose equity-in many cases representing a life’s savings-can plunge or even disappear.

(A)  they are potentially devastating for homeownerswhose

(B)  they can potentially devastate homeowners in that their

(C)  for homeowners they are potentially devastatingbecause their

(D)  for homeownersit is potentially devastating in that their

(E)  it can potentially devastate homeownerswhose

Rhetorical construction +Agreement

This sentence is correct and conciseThey clearly refers to property valuesand whose refers to homeowners

A  CorrectThe relationship between nouns and pronouns is correct in this sentencethe

 expression is concise and clear

B  Can potentially is redundantin that there is wordy, awkwardand ambiguous

C  Their appears to refer to they(property values) rather than to homeowners

D  It does not agree with property valuesin that their is wordy and awkward

E  It does not agree with property valuescan potentially is redundant

The correct answer is A

我错选了B,难道can和potentially重复了吗?不觉得重复啊.

in that是because的意思也没有错啊,除非in that不能用在书面语中?

如果说their可能会被认为指代不清的话,题干while values can hurt investeros,they...里的they也有对应的两个复数名词啊

总之,不懂了,向牛牛们请教

22  In recent years cattle breeders have increasingly used crossbreedingin part that their steers should acquire certain characteristics and partly because crossbreeding is said to provide hybrid vigor

(A)  in part that their steers should acquire certain characteristics

(B)  in part for the acquisition of certain characteristics in their steers

(C)  partly because of their steers acquiring certain characteristics

(D)  partly because certain characteristics should be acquired by their steers

(E)  partly to acquire certain characteristics in their steers

Parallelism + Rhetorical construction

The sentence gives two reasons that cattle breeders use crossbreedingthese reasons should be introduced in parallel ways with the word partlyThe infinitive to acquire clearly and concisely conveys the purpose of the crossbreeding

A  In part should be partlyuse of relative clause is ungrammatical

B  In part should be partlywordy and awkward use of prepositional phrases

C  Because of suggests that crossbreeding has occurred because the steers have already acquired certain characteristics

D  Passive voice should be acquired by is awkward and illogical

E  CorrectIn this sentencethe word partly is used to introduce both reasonsthe phrase to acquire certain characteristics is clear and concise

The correct answer is E

另外,partly to acqire...and partly because...是two reasons,如果一定要用because,D应改为:

partly because they want to acquire certain characteristics in their steers and partly because...

请nn指正!

19.in that的确不用于书面语,参见OG51.加入can,我感觉若加入的词对原句无任何帮助的话可被认为是多余。
22.感觉考方不喜欢should,因为should含ought to意味,参见OG124

In that is a conjunction that means inasmuch as; because in that has largely gone out of use, it is considered stilted and overly formal.

真题能不能上传,对比一下啊~~

B选项的错误原因在于在一个句子中,两个相同的代词要指代同一个东西。B选项中,前面的they指代的depressed property values,后面的their指代的是homeowners,两个代词指代的东西不一样,很confusing and ambiguous.而A选项的好处在于用whose引导的非限制性定从紧跟在先行词(homeowners)的后面避免了这个问题。
