解释说C的they指代不清，但是不是应该是按照就近指代来判断吗？they不应该就近指代clans吗？如果不在这里用就近指代，那什么时候才需要用呢？

我的理解是如果这是阅读理解，你可以使用就近指代去理解原文的含义。
但是如果是语法题，就应该选一个尽量不产生歧义的。

因为前面有一个their是指代most of the Monument Valley Anasazi ，后面的they如果就近指代就是指other clans，如果按前面的their一致性就指most of the Monument Valley Anasazi，所以指代不清.

明白了，谢谢，就是说在指代问题上，they和their,them都是要指代一样的吗？我之前是以为 they和they是一样的，和其他可以不同。

我觉得是的，同一个句子里不可以用一个代词指代不同的事务，而且根据语义they, their, them 都是属于第三方他们。
