Chat Transcript 6/10/04

Guest287> Hi Everyone!

wsom_Al> hello

Christine-WSOM> Welcome to our chat. Thanks for joining us.

Guest287> Hi Christine

Guest287> How's everybody doing in Cleveland?

Guest287> 21 degrees celcius, huh?

mindy-wsom> we're doing well...we have had a nice summer so far

Christine-WSOM> Cleveland is a little rainy, but otherwise okay!

wsom_Al> fantastic, thanks for asking!

Guest287> Good to hear, may I request for a little introduction on who's here please?

mindy-wsom> Deborah and Mindy are from the Career Services

WSoM-Keith> Online to chat with you today are: Christine Gill, Director-Admissions; Keith Auer, Assoc. Director-Admissions; Deb Bibb, Director- Career Services; Mindy Kannard, Director- Employer Relations

Guest287> Thanks.  Keith and Christine

WSoM-Keith> As well as Al Difranco, Asst. Director of Alumni Affairs

Guest287> Do allow me, first, to congratulate you on the 60% placement to-date.

mindy-wsom> 62% as of today!

mindy-wsom> thank you for noticing!

Christine-WSOM> Welcome to the chat ShihAn

Guest287> I would like to find out how many of such are student-visa holders?  As we are not allowed to have our visa transpired, what can we best do to secure an employment before graduation?

Guest287> Hi ShihAn!

ShihAn> hello all. this is Shih An.

mindy-wsom> just a second and we will get the stats on that...

wsom_Al> hi Shih An, welcome!

Guest287> Thanks Mindy.

Guest287> Please pardon my rudeness, this is Kevin Sim from Singapore.

wsom_Al> hi Kevin

Guest287> Hi Al!

ShihAn> hi Kevin!mindy-wsom> Hi Kevin...you may be interested in knowing that our top jobs this year were obtained by students who needed H1 support

Christine-WSOM> Welcome to all who have just joined our chat!

Christine-WSOM> Online to chat with you today are: Christine Gill, Director-Admissions; Keith Auer, Assoc. Director-Admissions;  Deb Bibb, Director- Career Services; Mindy Kannard, Director- Employer Relations

Guest287> Welcome Gaurav, Claire and Jose!

JoseNicolas> hello every body

WSoM-Keith> hello Gaurav, I'm glad you got my email and were able to join us

JoseNicolas> thanks Christine for your kind email

JoseNicolas> was very nice of you

Christine-WSOM> You are welcome Jose.

Claire> hello everyone~

WSoM-Keith> If anyone has any questions for Admission, Student Life and/or Placement, feel free to ask

JoseNicolas> I have some questions

JoseNicolas> I have enquired about the facilities for MBA students at Case

wsom_Al>

2,0what would you like to know about the facilities, Jose?

JoseNicolas> but could you tell me about the tecnology equpment etc

Guest287> Thanks Mindy, would you know what percentage of F1 student visa holders successfully secured a placement upon graduation?

JoseNicolas> these issues are important to me as I come from Mexico

Guest287> in the United States, that is.

JoseNicolas> and our universities are quiete different from yours in the US

mindy-wsom> Kevin....we are checking on an exact number...

WSoM-Keith> Hello Jose, our building and the equipment is all state of the art...

Guest287> Thanks.

mindy-wsom> Kevin...here it is....of the international students seeking, 60% have found employment

WSoM-Keith> each classroom is equipped with a flat panel control board, which controls all the features within the room (lights, computer, dvd/vcr, projection screens, etc.)

joshi> hi christine

WSoM-Keith> For more information on our technology equipment, please check out http://www.weatherhead.cwru.edu/itg/

Christine-WSOM> Hi Joshi

JoseNicolas> THANKS A LOT

Jen> when are the "rush hour" periods around cleveland? - where getting to campus might take awhile

Guest287> Are majority of these students double-masters holders?

mindy-wsom> Jen...where are you from?  We don't have much of a rush hour-maybe 5:30-6:30

joshi> christine, may i know something about the joint degree program, i.e., mba/msm-is

Christine-WSOM> Sure Joshi...what can I answer for you about that program.

JoseNicolas> Keith what about the placement for intl students

wsom_Al>

2,0I would have to second Mindy's comments about rush hour, Cleveland is one of the best cities to travel in and

2,0around, especially for a metropolitan city its size

WSoM-Keith> Guest287, I am not sure what you mean by double-masters holders...

joshi> how would it give me an edge over an mba programs

WSoM-Keith> are you asking if they come to Case with a Masters or if they come to complete one of our joint programs (ie.  MBA/MAcc)

Jen> mindy-w, I'm in Michigan.. I've had to go to Detroit and there are definite traffic stand-still periods of the day.. that's why I'm curious..

JoseNicolas> it would be a plus to have international experience when I come back to my country after finish studying, but how difficult is the gain a year of experience in the US?

mindy-wsom> Jen....not too bad here!

Guest287> Hi Keith, I am trying to clarify if the 60% of international students mentioned by Mindy pursued mainly a joint-Masters degree?

mindy-wsom> JoseNicolas...what industry are you in?

Christine-WSOM> Joshi--The joint degree builds on the foundation of the MBA core to provide the insights and skills in the MSMIS so that students will learn to adapt and promote the information design and technology that will enhance the organizational shift from functional hierarchy to team-based forms

JoseNicolas> well I applied for non for profit

WSoM-Keith> Jose, we do have an individual who works specifically with international students.

WSoM-Keith> We have a staff who is dedicated to the needs of international students seeking employment in the US as well as students who wish to work abroad. International students will have an individual career consultant who will work with them on their unique career plan.  Some employers recruit specifically for positions outside of the US and we attend 2-3 consortiums annually designed for international students.

mindy-wsom> Keith-did you see the placement stats for international students-60%?

Christine-WSOM> This added knowledge and skill set will give you the advantage over "MBA-only" candidates.

mindy-wsom> JoseNicolas-you can work for a year with optional practical training

JoseNicolas> but I have talked to some excecutives here such as the current Unilever CEO in Mexico city and he told that I should focus on conventional business first and then if I really want non for profit start a career in that field

joshi> does it have enhanced career prospects

WSoM-Keith> Guest287, I would say that a small percentage of international students in MBA program complete a joint program

Claire> Do international students whose concentration are marketing hardly  find a job in US? Could you give me a rough percentage of international students who find marketing related job?

Christine-WSOM> Joshi--Deb or Mindy might be better able to answer the career prospects question, but having had coursework within the "traditional" MBA and the second degree would only seem to make the candiates more attractive to employers.

mindy-wsom> JoseNicolas-let me ask the question a little differently....what kind of a job will you be looking for?

Devika> Hi all! I am not sure who I should address my question to. I would like to learn about the graduate assistantship opportunities at Case.

Guest287> Thanks Keith.  This is Kevin, from Singapore.  In your opinion, what can I do to improve my standing in securing a job before my F1-student visa transpires?  Would pursuing a joint-Master program further the cause?

WSoM-Keith> Hello Devika...

JoseNicolas> I am definitely looking for consulting

WSoM-Keith> All open positions are posted through the Office of Student Employment, which is a good place to begin your search. Different departments post positions at various times, but I would recommend starting your search mid-July.

mindy-wsom> Guest 287/Keith...an internship helps and it depends on the type of job you are seeking

JoseNicolas> either in the non for profit sector or the private one

joshi> hi mindy

WSoM-Keith> Guest287, it is difficult to say whether a joint-masters will benefit you in your career search without knowing your background

Guest287> Welcome Luis

mindy-wsom> consulting is improving as an industry...especially technology, health care and supply chain

WSoM-Keith> I recommend starting your search as soon as you begin in the program and work closely with the Career and laceName>StudentlaceName> laceName>LifelaceName> laceType>CenterlaceType> to make connections and build upon your assets

LuisYanque> good  afternoon everyone..

wsom_Al>

2,0hi Luis

Devika> Thanks Keith. Is there any past experience that helps in getting a better grad asstn? I mean, do people seek specific skill sets?

mindy-wsom> getting a consulting job is dependent on the relevant experience you have.

LuisYanque> I had problems loggin in

Christine-WSOM> Welcome to all who have joined the chat recently and thanks for your patience as we try to answers all your questions (it can sometimes get a little confusing as answers "cross" one another)

<Guest287> Thanks Mindy and Keith.  I've worked in the IT industry across different business sectors in the last 9 years.

<WSoM-Keith> Devika, by all means will past experiences come into play and be helpful in securing a GA position...

<mindy-wsom> 287-very good...high demand for key skills like oracle

<WSoM-Keith> for instance, if you have a marketing background, you probably would have a better shot of obtaining a position in a marketing department

<Devika> Right. Is there high competition for these

<Christine-WSOM> Hello GKM, welcome to the chat.

<joshi> can you give me an insight on theextra opportunities for joint degree holders as compared to mba graduates, mindy

<Devika> GA slots? or is it easy to find the right opportunity.

<mindy-wsom> it depends really joshi...what kind of job are you seeking

<Jen> to whom it may concern...I think that the link to log on (in the recent reminder email) may have been corrupted - I ended up logging on from the link in an earlier email..

<WSoM-Keith> Devika, there are a number of student worker positions avaialbe, but some will obviously be more competitive than others because of the area

<Guest287> Thanks Mindy, but having been in the IT industry for 9 years (with the last 3-years involved in the middle management), I hardly see myself involve in Oracle programming/development when I graduate from the MBA program.

<JoseNicolas> do most of the MBA find position in the mid west?

<Guest287> I am seeking for a career change/advancement.

<joshi> i would like to go for a specialized job as related to something like risk management

<mindy-wsom> joshi for example, jd/mbas do well in investment banking; the mba/msmis have done well in consulting

<Christine-WSOM> Jen--Sorry to hear about the problem with the link. Thanks for your resourcefulness to get in!

<Guest287> welcome GKM

<ShihAn> I agree with Jen. I got the same problem when logging in

<mindy-wsom> JoseNicolas-about 58% found jobs in the midwest in 2003

<WSoM-Keith> Joshi, a joint degree opens up new opportunities for individuals not only in management, but in the field of the other program (ie. JD and law)

<LuisYanque> Do we have many students for International Management??

<mindy-wsom> 287-what new career are you targeting?

<joshi> can you expand jd for me, keith

<Claire> Do international students whose concentration are marketing hardly  find jobs in US? Could you give me a rough percentage of international students who received marketing related jobs in USA?

<WSoM-Keith> Luis, students do not need to declare a concentration upon application, so it is difficult to know how many individuals will concentrate in IM

<LuisYanque> I see

<mindy-wsom> marketing is challenging for international students, unless you have prior work experience, a niche or other competitive advantage

<JoseNicolas> and what about finance?

<WSoM-Keith> I would say that a large number of students do take at least one course in Intrnt Mngt because of the trend for companies to think globally

<JoseNicolas> is as challenging as marketing?

<Guest287> Hi Mindy, I'm looking at law/consulting.

<mindy-wsom> JoseNicolas-no not as challenging, but experience is very important

<mindy-wsom> Joshi...jd is the law degree

<Devika> When does the specialisation have to be decided?

<GKM> This may sound silly but can you recommend any resources for brushing up on note taking techniques?  Is there a particular methodology that is generally used?

<Anton> Hello everyone

<Guest287> Hi Ebony

<WSoM-Keith> Devika, the concentration/specialization does not have to be declared until graduation actually

<Christine-WSOM> Welcome to all those who have joined our chat recently...

<Christine-WSOM> Online to chat with you today are: Christine Gill, Director-Admissions; Keith Auer, Assoc. Director-Admissions; Deb Bibb, Director- Career Services; Mindy Kannard, Director- Employer Relations

<joshi> hi devika, r u from india, if yes, have you already applied for the visa.

<Guest287> Hi Anton

<LuisYanque> Well I hope I can find more candidates in that concentration in order to gain more perspective

<mindy-wsom> 287-are you going to get a JD and an MBA?

<Christine-WSOM> Devika--it is not required that you declare a concentration....

<Anton> Hi Guest287....Hello again Christine.

<wsom_Al> hi GKM, a large percentage of faculty members will assist you in the notetaking process by providing handouts that at the very least - provide you with an outline of the lecture

<Devika> Keith, I don't understand. Do you mean the 3rd or 4th semester?

<Christine-WSOM> However, you will need to start thinking about the electives you want to take in Spring of the first year--as you register for the following Fall term.

<Devika> Joshi, hi! just filed my paper today - have interview on 25th.

<WSoM-Keith> GKM, I would recommend going to a local college/university bookstore and looking in the "Study guide" section--I'm sure you'll find a book that may be helpful

<Christine-WSOM> Hi Anton.

<Guest287> I'm thinking of doing that, would I be on time to work on the LSAT when I arrived in August?

<ingYang> Can they find jobs just around Cleveland or all over the country?

<mindy-wsom> Claire- of the 60% of international students who have found employement, 11% are in marketing of t

<WSoM-Keith> Devika, an MBA program is different from undergraduate where you have to declare a concentration to an advisor...

<mindy-wsom> Ping...our student work all over the midwest and on the east coast primarily

<joshi> can u tell me how much time do they take to call for an interview once applied

<ChristinePannetti> Hello

<wsom_Al> hi Christine!

<WSoM-Keith> in our MBA program, you can select from the courses you wish to take, in addition to the core curriculum, and design your own program

<Christine-WSOM> Guest287: You will be quite busy when you arrive in August--especially if you are participating in the Accounting, Fianance or Statistics prep workshops.

<mindy-wsom> 287-I can't advise you on the LSAT sorry...

<WSoM-Keith> You need to take at least 4 electives within an area to obtain a concentration

<ChristinePannetti> hi AL

<WSoM-Keith> and that is followed up on upon graduation when you complete the application for your diploma

<Devika> Ok, thanks

<joshi> keith, what could be consulting related mba concentrations.\

<Anton> Christine...I have accepted by Fin. Aid package...now what do I in order to get the funds?

<WSoM-Keith> Hi Christine

<ChristinePannetti> Hi Keith how are you?

<Devika> *BLEEP*

<LuisYanque> I think the first semester  will have mandatory core courses

<mindy-wsom> Joshi-it varies from a day to weeks...depends on the organization and their level of interest.  For example bank of America takes 54 days for the entire interview process

<WSoM-Keith> Joshi, here is a listing of our concentrations,

<WSoM-Keith> This link will provide you with more information (click on it)

<Anton> ShinAn...hello, are you in Cleveland yet?

<Christine-WSOM> Anton--I'm sorry, I'm not sure if I understand your question...do you mean you submitted your financial aid paperwork (FAFSA, CWRU form?)

<WSoM-Keith> Consulting is a fairly general field--there are consultants for marketing, info technology, supply chain, etc.

<WSoM-Keith> Christine, things are going well, how are you doing? Is OU finished yet for the summer?

<Christine-WSOM> Luis: The first semester and most of the second semster are mandatory/core courses...there is the opportunity to take an elective or two in the spring of the first year, but most electives are taken during the second year.

<Guest287> Thanks Christine and Mindy.  I am not participating in the prep course, how essential are they?

<Anton> Christine...I have received the fin. aid award...How do I go about getting the actual funds?

<Christine-WSOM> Guest287: If you have a "working knowledge" of those areas, then you would be fine in the core courses...

<joshi> how would enterpreneurship do for consulting

<GKM> When is the latest one can expect to hear of their financial aid award?

<Christine-WSOM> The prep courses are for those with little to no background.

<LuisYanque> that is right

<mindy-wsom> joshi...not a good preparation unless you want to work for a start-up consulting firm...lots of our students have more than one concentration

<WSoM-Keith> *BLEEP*

<ChristinePannetti> I have a question regaring the course waivers...I filled out the form on the internet to have 2 of the classes evaluated, when do we hear if those classes have been waived?

<Christine-WSOM> Anton: I would suggest you contact your "Academic Service Support Coordinator" here at our school--she can help you go through the process. Her name is Nikki Ford and she can be reached at NAA@po.cwru.edu or 216-368-3399.

<joshi> devika, which state have you applied from

<Devika> bombay

<WSoM-Keith> Christine, you would need to take the waiver exam, which would then be reviewed and a decision would be made

<LuisYanque> do we have students from south america or Italy??

<ChristinePannetti> Keith, I thought that I read that the econ waiver that I applied for said that it would just evaluate your previous coursework

<Christine-WSOM> GKM: If you are asking about aid other than scholarship, you should contact our Academic Support department if you have already submitted your financial aid paperwork...

<ingYang> Christine, I was awarded a scholarship of $14,000 a year. Does it require that I must complete 15 credit hours ( 5 courses) per semester.

<JoseNicolas> I am from Mexico Luis

<Christine-WSOM> If you are asking about scholarship, those decisions were made at the time of your admission.

<LuisYanque> Nice to meet you Nicolas, I was born in Peru

<Guest287> Thanks Christine, no working knowledge but I studied Further Mathematics for Cambridge 'A' Level and took basic accounting for my diploma.

<Anton> Thanks Christine.

<joshi> christine,r there any chances of fin. aid once i reach weatherhead

<JoseNicolas> nice to meet you Luis

<LuisYanque> Jose what is your background?

<Christine-WSOM> PingYang: Any scholarship award requires a student to comoplete a minimum of 15 credit hours per semester.

<JoseNicolas> I am an economist

<JoseNicolas> and yours?

<LuisYanque> a marine engineer

<WSoM-Keith> Christine, some of the courses require individuals to take a waiver exam, others will review prior coursework--either way, it will all happen during orientation week

<LuisYanque> my father is an economist

<ChristinePannetti> ok thank you!

<Christine-WSOM> Joshi: We do not make any additional/new scholarship awards once a student has enrolled. If you were awarded scholarship, it is automatically renewed for the second year of the program.

<GKM> who should I contact if I’m interested in a Summer Abroad program in conjunction with the fall semester exchange program?

<joshi> hi luis,i'm amarine engineer too.\

<WSoM-Keith> This is the first year we have implemented the course waiver eligibility for the full time program

<Jen> I am looking at concentrating in finance. On the banking/finance page, none of the classes are high-lighted as eligible to count towards a concentration. Is that an error?

<Christine-WSOM> If you are asking about loans, you can go through the loan process during the second year, even if you didn't do so the first year.

<LuisYanque> nice to meet you Joshi

<Anton> PingYang...my friend, no need to disclose your scholarship $ to everyone here *be humble*

<ChristinePannetti> Yes, that is what I remember reading in the email from Christine

<ShihAn> hi again. I got disconnected. haha...I think I better got a new laptop before the classes...

<LuisYanque> where are you from

<Anton> ShinhAn...are you in Cleveland yet?

<Christine-WSOM> GKM: Are you asking about the "Summer Institute"?

<ingYang> thank you, Christine. Can I get any other kind of financial aid except loans?

<Anton> Mindy...who recruited on campus this year from the banking industry and for what positions?

<ShihAn> hello Anton! are you the Anton I know? haha. kidding. I am still in Taiwan and will be in cleveland in July 20

<Devika> What would be the right time to arrive in Cleveland, keeping in mind housing has to be finalised? Would August 1st be too early or too late - or just right?!

<Christine-WSOM> PingYang: You can always look for scholarships offered by organizations outside the University (www.FastWeb.com or WWW.WiredScholar.com)...

<Guest287> Hi ShihAn, so I guess you will not be there for the judicial judgment on the President election?

<Anton> Shin...July 20 is my last day of work. everyone but my employer knows it at this point.

<Christine-WSOM> But we do not have any other aid besides the scholarships we've already awarded or the loans a student can apply for.  You can pursue on-campus, part-time work once you arrive on campus.

<mindy-wsom> Anton...national city bank-on campus; we take our students to NYC for job opps-there our students met with citigroup, wells fargo, jp morgan chase, bank of america...we also have a relationship with Wachovia and UBS

<wsom_Al> hi Devika, August 1st would probably be a good date to arrive in Cleveland.  You can also do a a great deal of, research online on housing options in the area.

<mindy-wsom> Anton-all were associate positions...does that answer your question?

<Devika> thanks Al. Is it also a good date for securing GAs

<Christine-WSOM> Welcome to all those who have joined our chat recently...

<Guest287> Hi Brian

<mindy-wsom> Anton-also PNC (regional community banking and capital markets), Ohio Savings, Fifth Third

<BrianGibb> hey how is everyone?

<mindy-wsom> Anton-also Capital One for analaysts

<mindy-wsom> analysts...sorry

<ShihAn> Kevin, right. but I will ask my relatives here about the result..

<Christine-WSOM> Devika: In our Admission Office, we send an email (once classes have started) to all new students--asking students who are interested in GA positions to submit a resume and cover letter.

<BrianGibb> i can't chat long i have to take my last Final of my undergrad career

<Anton> Mindy...are those positions in Finance, operations, etc??? Did Key bank not show up?

<mindy-wsom> finance

<Christine-WSOM> Thanks for joining us Brian...good luck on your exam!

<BrianGibb> thank you

<mindy-wsom> Key Bank eliminated MBA Associates program

<Guest287> I'm sure you will find the news on the internet a cheaper option, ShihAn.

<WSoM-Keith> hi Brian

<BrianGibb> i have a question about parking

<WSoM-Keith> I bet that's a good feeling

<WSoM-Keith> go ahead.

<mindy-wsom> We have more success, Brian with direct hires at Key

<wsom_Al> Devika, the process Christine mentioned with waiting until classes start for GA interviews and hiring seems to be, consistent with other offices

<ShihAn> Anton, finally you will be the student again. that's nice..

<Guest287> Hi All Students, this is Kevin from Singapore.  It would be great for us to get to know one another before school starts. If you think likewise, please send an email to me at sg_kevin(A) hotmail.com.  I'd compile the list and reply to everyone.  If you wish, however, to opt out from the list, do indicate in your email.  It would be good if you can provide a little background of yourself, and your interests in the MBA program, ie. the concentration and other

<BrianGibb> how can we reserve a space?

<WSoM-Keith> Brian, check out this website for new students...

<BrianGibb> i tried to do it online but i don't have a student id number

<WSoM-Keith> This link will provide you with more information (click on it)

    http://www.weatherhead.cwru.edu/newstudents/info/

<GKM> Im looking to extend the time spent in another country by doing something over the summer prior to the fall semester.  Not sure what the summer institute is?

<ShihAn> good job, kevin.

<Anton> Mindy..thanks, great answers.  Did Progressive Insurance show up?  What about Eaton Corp.?

<WSoM-Keith> Brian, I will follow up for you and get back to you

<mindy-wsom> Progressive and Eaton do recruit our students, yes

<BrianGibb> thanks keith i would appreciate that

<Jen> Hello - I'm still trying to figure out which finance classes count towards a concentration.. can anyone help with that?

<WSoM-Keith> Good luck on your last final!

<Guest287> Thanks ShihAn, now I need the cooperation from all.

<joshi> hi christine, though i have received scholarship, i would definitely need to work there to manage my finances, what r the chances of receiving any fin. aid during the course.

<Christine-WSOM> GKM: The summer institute is our 6-credit hour course that includes a 2 1/2 week trip to multiple European countries (http://www.weatherhead.cwru.edu/mba/intl_institutes.htm)...

<Anton> Mindy..how many students, on ave. does Eaton take, and for what positions?

<Christine-WSOM> You could also look to pursue an international internship over the summer as well.

<ShihAn> dear admission officer, I check the New Student Website almost everyday, looking for the latest information..becoming part of my life now. haha

<BrianGibb> thanks i have one more quick question, is there anyway to confirm we are signed up for the finance and accounting camps

<mindy-wsom> Eaton hires about 3/year in accounting, operations and IT rotational programs

<Christine-WSOM> GKM: Here's the other link: http://www.weatherhead.cwru.edu/mba/intl_other.htm

<Christine-WSOM> ShihAn--Glad to hear it!

<WSoM-Keith> I do not have the list in front of me, but I can check for you and get back to you with the answer, along with the parking info

<joshi> luis, which company were u working for & how much work ex.

<WSoM-Keith> If you registered online for the camps, there should be no problem

<Christine-WSOM> You can also look to the "New Student Newsletter" for "news-type" items as well:

    http://www.weatherhead.cwru.edu/mba/Headline_News.htm

<BrianGibb> thanks a lot.  I have to run though i wish i could chat longer.

<Guest287> Keith, please forward to me the "parking info" as well.  Thanks!

<GKM> I’m more interested in the exchange than in the institute.  Would Intl internships be secured at the same time as regular summer internships?

<LuisYanque> I was working for carnival Cruise Lines Inc. for about six years

<ShihAn> do you already have the student profile of 2006? what is the average age? w/e? gmat?...etc

<BrianGibb> hope everyone has a great day.  Bye.

<wsom_Al> good luck Brian!

<Guest287> Good luck Brian

<BrianGibb> thanks

<Christine-WSOM> Joshi: If you are asking about scholarship, we do not make awards to students during the year....only at the time of admission. Your option would be to pursue outside scholarships or part-time work.

<Anton> Mindy..on ave. what percentage of interns work close to Cleveland (1-2 hrs drive)

<Christine-WSOM> GKM: The timeframe would be the same.  If you are interested in both the Exchange and Summer internships, you should talk with Fran Cort--our Assistant Dean. She acts as advisor to all students interested in these options...

<LuisYanque> what about you..

<GKM> thanks

<mindy-wsom> approximately 70% work in internship nearby

<ingYang> Christine, how about the job opportunities in financial field for MBA graduates from Weatherhead?

<joshi> yes christine, i would like to know something more about applying for outside scholarship & chances of receiving it.

<Christine-WSOM> GKM: Fran can be reached at Fran.Cort@case.edu or 216-368-3315.  You can also meet with her once you arrive on campus.

<joshi> i worked for bergesen dy asafor 2 years\

<Christine-WSOM> PingYang: I think that Mindy would be better to answer the question about employement...

<mindy-wsom> Ping...what type of finance work are you interested in?  Did you see my earlier response to Brian and Anton?

<LuisYanque> In Norway??

<ingYang> Do they find jobs just around Cleveland or all over the country/

<joshi> yes, right.\

<Christine-WSOM> Joshi: These scholarships are not awarded by our school, therefore I cannot tell you of your chances. You should visit these websites and register to be notified about those kinds of scholarships: www.FastWeb.com and www.WiredScholar.com

<WSoM-Keith> Online to chat with you today are: Christine Gill, Director-Admissions; Keith Auer, Assoc. Director-Admissions; Deb Bibb, Director- Career Services; Mindy Kannard, Director- Employer Relations

<Anton> Christine...how about his slogan "Case is the Place!"

<mindy-wsom> PingYang...our finance grads primarily work in NYC, Ohio and on the East Coast

<WSoM-Keith> and Al DiFranco, Assistant Director of Alumni Affairs

<Christine-WSOM> Anton: I'll bring that up at our next Marketing Committee meeting!

<Anton> Christine...having said that, my wife thinks I should go into marketing *Haha*

<Christine-WSOM> Joshi:  Are you asking about the rankings in general--or in relation to the ability to receive job offers outside the US?

<joshi> luis, 6 years is a lot, did u receive scholarship, where r u from

<Christine-WSOM> Anton--I'm sure we can recommend a few marketing classes you can take ;-)

<mindy-wsom> PingYang....we have corporate finance and investment banking opps. in NYC, on the east coast and in ohio.  They are mainly commercial banking-associate programs

<LuisYanque> I was born in Peru, scholarship? at Case..

<wsom_Al> hi Jen - we have two or three alumni that I know of that are in the restaurant/hospitality/travel

<wsom_Al> industry

<joshi> no, i would like to know about the general ranking and also the chances of improvement in rankings in the near future.

<WSoM-Keith> Hello Luis, how are you doing? What is your question about scholarship?

<mindy-wsom> Ping-we also have many corporate jobs, like a rotational finance position at a large energy company and various analyst positions

<wsom_Al> I'm sure there are more, but I personally know of a few

<Anton> Mindy...I'll take commercial banking over IB any day...life's too short!

<Christine-WSOM> We have carried out a thorough analysis of the reported statistics and found that we showed a marked improvement on many ranked dimensions.  Most notably, recruiters, arguably our most important external audience, ranked Weatherhead in a tie for 25th place in the nation. However, the method for reporting placement statistics required by U.S. News reduced the placement percentage and kept us out of the top-ranked schools.

<joshi> surprising, may i know ur gmat score

<Jen> al, do you know what types of positions they held after recieving their mba?

<Christine-WSOM> We are always working to improve our program--in terms of program, services, etc.  While we consider the rankings, they are not the only factor we consider when making improvements--the student come first.

<LuisYanque> Joshi..you do not want to know that

<Anton> Joshi...you can help to increase Weatherhead's rankings.  Graduate and go on to become a great world leader one day!

<wsom_Al> those that I know of tend to go into sales and/or high-level customer service at first and climb up the ladder from there

<ingYang> Mindy, you mean graduates usually got investment jobs from commercial banks in New York/

<Christine-WSOM> while this chat is a great place to share information, it is NOT appropriate to share GPA, GMAT, scholarship information.

<mindy-wsom> that is one option...NYC jobs are mainly with investment banks.  citigroup hires some for commercial positions

<LuisYanque> Keith...I am doing great, I do not have any questions about scholarship I was just answering Joshi's question

<WSoM-Keith> Great, looking forward to seeing you again this coming fall

<JoeMarkus> Anyone on from outside the U.S. besides me?

<LuisYanque> it will be great.

<Devika> Hi Joe. I am from Bombay - India

<Guest287> May I find out the size of our Alumni, and how active are the members?

<LuisYanque> Hi Joe I am fro Peru

<joshi> i do understand that but what i fail to understand is why couldn't weatherhead overtake fisher school of business as i feel that weatherhead is certainly better and thus have selected it.

<ShihAn> Joe--here!!!!!

<Guest287> Hi Joe

<wsom_Al> Brian, we have over 14,000 alumni across the globe

<JoeMarkus> Now that's what I like to see. An international crowd!

<Marina> Hi Joe I am from Japan

<wsom_Al> we are fortunate to have a strong and very active alumni base that assists the schools in a number of ways

<Guest287> Hi Joe, Kevin from Singapore.

<Jen> al, do you happen to recall what companies they went to and if any of them reached corporate level?

<JoeMarkus> Are you currently in Japan? I'm in tokyo right now.

<Guest287> Konbanwa, Marina-san

<wsom_Al> including recruiting and hiring our students, serving as mentors to students, helping us recruit new students for our programs, and others

<Marina> I am in Yokohama, but work in tokyo

<Christine-WSOM> Joshi: There are MANY factors that go in to the various rankings. For example, we will admit for diversity (work experience, international background, etc.) and not as much for GMAT score...

<Anton> Mindy...aside from Eaton corp, are there any other automotive companies that recruit at Case?

<mindy-wsom> Jen...are you seeking a corporate position in the restaurant idustry?

<JoeMarkus> Are you starting the program this August?

<Christine-WSOM> We feel this is more important for our program and students. Other schools make other factors more of a priority.

<mindy-wsom> industry?  Maybe Deb or I can answer your question?

<Jen> still deciding, but I'm definitely aiming to be on the high end of the food-chain

<Anton> Marina...I made a short stop in Tokyo last fall.

<ShihAn> wow, kevin, you did learn japanese...

<Marina> Yes. I start the program this August

<JoeMarkus> What kind of work do you do in Tokyo? Anyhow, I've living here for so long that it'll be nice to know people that can relate to life here.

<Devika> I need to excuse myself from the chat. Is there anyway I can access the transcript later?

<Guest287> hai, benkyo o ni-nen desu

<Marina> I a

<wsom_Al> Kevin, are there any specific questions you have about our alumni?

<Christine-WSOM> Devika: We will be sending the transcript out to everyone early next week.

<Jen> al, ...and I am not aiming for a sales position (although I know that sales is a part of most hospitlity positions)

<Marina> I sell American Beef, but no American beef here because of BSE

<Devika> Thanks Christine.

<Devika> And good day to all!

<joshi> christine, was that an answer to my question

<WSoM-Keith> thanks for attending Devika

<Guest287> Thanks Al, the strength of the Alumni is certainly one of the factors to consider on my end, how best they can serve my interests in securing a job in the United States

<wsom_Al> Jen, Mindy and Deb likely have a better feel for the industry for you.  I was just speaking from the few experiences the alumni I know of have had in that industry.

<JoeMarkus> Business must be slow then. I was in the securities industry for 7 years, working in Ebisu. Where abouts in Tokyo do you work?

<ShihAn> I would like to ask is it hard for international student to get a marketing related job in the States, because of the cultural background. Many friends of mine they said international students will be snet back to his/her country...cuz they know the market well there...

<Anton> Marina...we had beef in Japan, self cooked, like a fondu...I forgot what that was called though...it was good.

<joshi> hi gaurav, r u from india

<Guest287> I guess questions will thus be related to this, like what positions are they holding, are they decision makers or influencers etc?

<Christine-WSOM> Joshi: If you are referring to my comments about GMAT, diversity, etc., yes, that was part of my answer to your question.

<JoeMarkus> Anton, I think you're thinking of shabu shabu.

<ShihAn> 2 years is enough...kevin

<ShihAn> haha

<wsom_Al> Kevin, I'm glad you have that mindset.  Alumni involvement can certainly help shape a school, and I like to think that our alumni are helpful in forwarding our mission.

<mindy-wsom> ShihAn-yes marketing is more challenging, but 11% of our international students who obtained employment got the jobs in the marketing field

<Guest287> Bye Dev

<JoeMarkus> How many of you are planning on working abroad after obtaining your MBA, and what kind of field do you hope to pursue?

<Anton> Joe...that's it..Shabu shabu....

<ShihAn> pity. is there anything the career center can do?

<JoeMarkus> Also, are of you also doing the dual MBA/MIM with Thunderbird?

<wsom_Al> we have a number of alumni in prominent positions in companies such as National City Bank, Parker Hannifin, Eaton Corp. and many, many others

<Guest287> That was more than a decade ago, ShihAnl; I will definitely be more comfortable in speaking Mandarin with you.

<wsom_Al> and those alumni tend to be active alumni

<Anton> Mindy...aside from Eaton Corp...are there other automotive type companies with a relationship to Case?

<mindy-wsom> ShinAn...we do work hard at attracting new opportunities in the fields that our students are interested in-in fact that is my job.  I would also say that the 11% is based on the interests of our international students...the majority of our international MBA students over the past couple of years have been interested in finance or supply chain

<ShihAn> haha..kevin, so we better not in the same E.A.T group, otherwise, we speak mandarin all the time...haha

<Guest287> Thanks Al, what positions do they usually recruit?  Will my lack of Financial background be a disadvantage?

<joshi> hi, anybody opting for mba/msm-is joint degree

<LuisYanque> Who can kind to explain what exactly is about the Pundreson team Building Experience

<mindy-wsom> Anton...we have alums at GM and Ford...several auto suppliers (like Delphi) hire our students

<joshi> christine, what would be the right time to reach cleveland

<WSoM-Keith> Luis, Punderson is a state park about 30 minutes from CASE

<Guest287> ShihAn, can you tell me more of the EAT?

<WSoM-Keith> we take the students out there during orientation and they get to work together as a group

<Christine-WSOM> Joshi: If you are not taking part in the pre-semester Accounting, Finance and Statistics workshops, than August 1 is a good date.

<Guest287> Joshi, are you admitted to the Thunderbird?

<ShihAn> thanks, mindy! I will work hard myself too. *wink*

<WSoM-Keith> in a number of different initiatives and then process them with a facilitator

<WSoM-Keith> it really is a lot of fun and good opportunity to get to know your classmates better

<wsom_Al> Kevin, the positions vary depending on the company and your experience.  Obviously, lack of experience will mean you may not qualify for some job opportunities.

<Christine-WSOM> If you are taking part, and would still need to find housing, you should come a bit earlier (the workshops start August 2).

<wsom_Al> But there tend to be a number of opportunities that do not call for a significant amount of experience as well.

<JoeMarkus> For any of you that are currently in the Tokyo area or plan to be between now and August feel free to drop me a line at josip_markus@mac.com and we'll get together for a drink.

<heidi> Hello everyone.  I'm wondering if a majority of students go to the first 2 math camps (Accounting and Finance, I think).

<Guest287> Thanks Al, I am caught in a dilemma then

<joshi> christine, my visa thoing is getting late, will august 10 be too late.

<wsom_Al> you will have opportunities to network with alumni during your time here, and that can certainly help your cause tremendously

<JoeMarkus> Unfortunately I'm going to miss the accounting/finance/stats workshop because I'll be in Japan until just before mid-August. How much of a problem will that be?

<Christine-WSOM> Joshi: If you are not participating in the workshops, arriving August 10 will still give you time before Orientation to secure housing, set up utility service, etc.

<ShihAn> Joshi, don't go to thunderbird lah. Weatherhead is much better!!! haha (I am another thunderbird admit)

<JoseNicolas> Christine my letter admission was issued last May 24, when is my deadline to decide to enroll at Case?

<Guest287> Thank you for your assurance, Al.  I shall begin my quest by paying you a visit.

<wsom_Al> please do, I'll be happy to help!

<joshi> thanks christine, anyways i don't plan to participate in workshops

<LuisYanque> Thanks Keith

<Christine-WSOM> Jose: You have six weeks from when your letter is dated to notify us of your decision.

<JoseNicolas> ph thanks a lot

<Marina> Christine: I plan to arrive in Cleveland Aug1 and have to find a place to live. Do you think I can find a place after Aug.1?

<WSoM-Keith> you're welcome

<JoseNicolas> I definitely plan to enroll at case

<Christine-WSOM> Jose: Very glad to hear it!

<Guest287> I will, Al, if possible, do drop me a line at sg_kevin(A) hotmail.com. We can pick up from there.

<JoseNicolas> but even that I studied economics I want to participate in the workshops

<Anton> Marina...look for housing in Cleveland Heights or Shaker Heights...great places!

<JoseNicolas> thatstarts on August 2 right?

<wsom_Al> I'll be certain to do so.  In the meantime, my e-mail address is albert.difranco@case.edu.  If you think of any questions later on, feel free to drop me a line.

<Marina> Thanks, Anton

<Christine-WSOM> Jose: Yes, the first workshop starts August 2.

<joshi> luis, where did u pursue ur engineering from

<JoseNicolas> does it have any cost??

<Guest287> Hi Ematson and Adekalu

<JoseNicolas> I know that I have to make a deposit commitment of 500

<Christine-WSOM> Jose: There is a cost for the materials. You can see more info and register online for the workshops at:  http://www.weatherhead.cwru.edu/newstudents/info/campreg.htm

<JoseNicolas> but I know nothing else sorry

<LuisYanque> The laceName>MerchantlaceName> laceName>MarinelaceName> laceType>AcademylaceType> - Peru

<Anton> Marina..stay away from areas just west of Case.

<ShihAn> *crying* why I got disconnect twice...

<JoseNicolas> thanks a lot Christine

<JoseNicolas> I have another question

<Guest287> Thank

<Guest287> Thanks

<Guest287> Al.

<LuisYanque> and yours.??

<Adekalu> Hello everyone

<joshi> so luis, now mba , what do u plan for future

<wsom_Al> you're welcome, Kevin

<Christine-WSOM> Jose: Yes, you would need to submit your deposit. I would suggest you visit our website "For New Students" that lists things to do before you arrive, has the Orietnation and first semestser calendar, links for housing, etc:  http://www.weatherhead.cwru.edu/newstudents/info/

<LuisYanque> I will take the MBA/MIM concentration

<Jen> Anton, what's wrong with the areas just west of Case (that's where I'm looking...)

<JoseNicolas> I have scheduled the interview to get the student visa on July 15, so that how can fing a place to stay while finding permanent accomodation

<joshi> bis, pilani, india

<LuisYanque> I know many officers from India

<Christine-WSOM> Jose: There are some temporary housing options available:

    http://www.weatherhead.cwru.edu/mba/intl_housing.htm

<joshi> may i know its advantages, luis

<Anton> Jen...from what I saw, it wasn't too pleasant, unlike areas in C. Heights and Shaker Heights.

<LuisYanque> advantages??

<JoseNicolas> thanks a lot Christine!!! for your patience and assistance

<Jen> anton, thanks for the "heads-up"

<Guest287> Just an online poll, how many of you (the students) are taking MBA/MIM?

<joshi> advantages of an mba/mim program

<Christine-WSOM> Anton and Jen: Just west of the University there are not many housing options (compared to Shaker or Cleveland Heights), but west of DOWNTOWN is where I live and there are many options.

<WSoM-Keith> We will be finishing up with the chat in a few minutes, so if anyone has any additional questions, please let us know

<Adekalu> I was wonderin how fast it is to get accomodation in cleveland, considering that I am coming from NIgeria

<Guest287> welcome back again, ShihAn

<ShihAn> dear all, here is my MSN: andy_taiwan@msn.com  incase that I got disconnected, please feel free to add me to your msn list!

<Anton> Christine...are you referring to Lakeview?

<joshi> bye everybody, anybody interested can contact me at gjoshi81(A) hotmail.com

<Anton> Jen...I had to consider schooling options for my sons...that's why I chose Cleveland Heights.

<Christine-WSOM> Anton: Actually, it's Lakewood, but that is one of the areas west of downtown. Also, just the west side of

Cleveland--areas called Tremont, Ohio City, Detroit Shoreway area...that's where I live.

<LuisYanque> that depends of what are you looking for...the kind of management that you may need for a multinational company would be different than a local one..

<Jen> keith, I'm still trying to figure out what finance courses "count" towards a concentration.  On the banking/finance webpage, none of the courses were highlighted as eligible

<ingYang> Thanks Christine and Mindy. have a good day.

<Christine-WSOM> Adekalu: Many international students are able to find housing in just a few days...

<Jen> anton, I'm trying to find something quiet and less "big-city"..

<Christine-WSOM> THe University publishes an online list of houses/apartments to rent every week. You could access this and make contacts before you arrive.

<WSoM-Keith> Jen, any finance courses, with the exception of the core class, will be counted towards a concentration in finance

<joshi> do u plan to pursue your management career with a shipping company

<Guest287> Thanks Al, Thanks Keith, Thanks Mindy for answering my questions.  I look forward to meet all of you here

<Jen> keith, thanks

<wsom_Al> you're welcome, Kevin, best wishes!

<mindy-wsom> nice speaking to all of you...

<Anton> Jen...I found a nice quiet place in C. Heights, seconds from laceName>SeverancelaceName> laceType>TownlaceType> center.  It is QUIET and close to big city stuff.

<WSoM-Keith> Jen, if you have additional questions, we can talk more about your curriculum during orientation

<WSoM-Keith> Thank you for visiting our On-line Open House Chat this afternoon. We hope all of your questions were answered and that you had an opportunity to chat with other admitted students and Weatherhead representatives.  If you have additional questions or would like additional information, please visit www.weatherhead.cwru.edu.  Thank you again for your time and we look forward to seeing you on campus!

<Christine-WSOM> Adekalu: The off-campus housing list can be found at:

    http://housing.case.edu/housing/offcampus/default.html

<LuisYanque> Carnival Cruise Lines or princess Cruise Lines

<Anton> jen...contact me at anguyen@cstech-inc.com for more info, if you like.

<Jen> can I get a transcript of this chat?

<Anton> Bye everyone...Take care Christine.

<Christine-WSOM> Jen: We will be sending a transcript out to everyone by early next week.

<wsom_Al> I wish you all the best.  Hope to see you very soon!

<Christine-WSOM> Thanks Anton--you too.
