The number of undergraduate degrees in engineering......from 1978 to 1985.

B) increased more than two times

C)more than doubled (正确)

D) was more than doubled

OG对B的解释:distorts the sentence's meaning, stating the number of engineering degrees conferred increased on more than two distinct occasions.(这是神马语言?没明白他在说啥?求教!!!)

OG 对D 的解释: was....doubled suggests without warrant that some unnamed agent increased the number of engineering degrees.(是说这句话在没有证据的情况下描述了一个不知名的动因 increase the N,这样难到就不对吗? 即使没有说明作用者是谁,但是总不能说数字本身自己可以double吧,其实我知道 double 可以做及物动词 ,也可以做 不及物的动词,例如:The house has doubled in value since I bought it(不及物)The baby doubled its weight in a year(及物),那么怎么去判断什么时候及物什么时候不及物呢?

对了 原选项是 : increased by more than twice . 那就是增加了两倍多,那么按原意就是 是它的三倍多啊。。。

这个原句的表达本身有问题恩  increase by后面不能接twice,而是应该接...times  这题中的twice应该改为2 times
不过根据这个原句,句意好像是有点问题了   我查了下manhattan  是这样解释的

In the original sentence, "increased by more than twice" is unidiomatic; when numbers increase, they "increase by more than a factor of two." Also, "twice" is an adverb; only nouns can follow the preposition "by."

Answer choice (B) introduces an issue in meaning. When the number of degrees "increased more than two times," that means over the period of 1978 to 1985, it has gone up at least twice: maybe in 1980 and then in 1981. The other times, it has stayed steady or gone down.

In answer choice (D), "was more than" demonstrates a comparison: "The number of pennies was more than the number of nickels." It doesn't make sense for us to say "the number ... was more than doubled": we cannot compare "number" with "doubled" since doubled is not a noun.

The past perfect tense "had more than doubled" in (E) is not justified. The past perfect is used when there is a comparison between one past action with another past action (or past time marker). In this sentence, we're not comparing "the number ... had ... doubled" with any other time reference.

(C) is correct because "doubled" is used correctly in the simple past.

看完了我明白了B可能有歧义  唉 这个点还真是很trick啊
D的解释挺好的

得多谢你的这个问题呢  以前怎么没发现这题很纠结  看来错误选项看的不够仔细啊~

呵呵,谢谢你把manhattan 都翻出来了,原来 B 选项的 times 是按次数 来讲的,而不是 倍数的 含义啊,是说至少上升了两次, 就是说 times (倍数)可能被理解为 time +s (次数),所以会有歧义。

但是 D , 我的理解是 the number was doubled 被增加了一倍——  the number was more than doubled 被增加了一倍还多,我压根没想到manhattan 会说 number 在 和 doubled 作比较。。。。我觉得我理解也不错啊。。。哎呀呀,我又在纠结中。。。

不过,起码 B 我是完全理解鸟 ,爱死你鸟! 是不是在公共场合说不好额。。。呵呵。
