There's no need to explain in an optional essay why you would get an MBA degree after a non-MBA masters or even a Phd degree. Trust me, it's very common, especially for Chinese and Indian applicants, to apply for an MBA with a non-MBA masters. Jon is right on spot though when he says that you need more explanation for getting a 2nd MBA. In fact, a lot of schools state clearly that you will not be eligible to apply to their programs after you've acquired an MBA. Unfortunately, a lot of Asian Universities label most of their 商科 masters degrees as MBAs even though, in essence, they are very different compared to typical top MBA programs. -- by 会员 csbowow (2011/4/16 3:48:37)
Hey there—thanks for the comments! Just one clarification though—some masters programs are somewhat similar in nature to MBAs. So masters in finance, management, even production etc. We tell all our clients that if there appears to be ANY overlap between the prospective MBA and the old degree, then it is of course worthwhile to do an optional essay. We received this information from a woman who used to work for us, who was a former Dean of Admissions at a top-30 school. The trick is whether or not there is overlap—if there is, we MUST address it in the app. If the masters is in astrophysics (or something with NO relevance to business) then there would be no need to address it. Hope this helps, and let me know if we can be of any further help to you my friend!
